FZR600 Build, Little Details

Re: FZR600 Build, Brakelines 101

Great looking build! I agree with you about the early sport bikes; they just seem to have more "character" than the current ones. Also agree on the race rep section idea!

Re: FZR600 Build, Brakelines 101

Thanks for all the comments gents.

I do have a cover for the rear seat, but it adds a body line because the fit isn't as good as it could be. A one piece tail looks so much better. Maybe if I get another bike I'll go with the 1 piece.

I do need to put spool mounts on this thing.

great write-up on the brakes and bravo on the execution, looks clean as hell. Kinda makes me want to try it myself.

Thanks a lot Bob- It's a great mod, especially if a solution isn't commercially available. The downside is that it's a little on the expensive side. The fittings run about $8 each on average. I had basically no waste and it cost me about $105 to do the front lines. This is comparable to a set of pre-made lines, so I guess there's no cheap way to do it.

Re: FZR600 Build, Brakelines 101

Put some fresh powder on the foot control components and the bar ends. makes a world of difference in the look. I'll have these reassembled and back on the bike this weekend along with some aluminum foot pegs. I'm dying to put the rear shock in, so I think I'll tackle that on Sunday as well. I also put the front brake pads in, which took all of about 4 minutes.

Re: FZR600 Build, Fancy Footwork

Also, I really love those brake lines.

Re: FZR600 Build, Adjustable Rear Shock

Put the R6 rear shock in today. Took a little modification but not too bad. I had to enlarge the top bushing hole, make some spacers, and trim the lower clevis. The R6 shock is slightly shorter, so I had to make new dog bones to keep the ride height the same. Even though you don't see them, they aren't really sexy/racy enough for me. I may have to remake them or modify these without weakening them. It feels really soft when I throw a leg over it, so I'm not sure if that spring rate is going to work for me. It's been so long since I've ridden this bike it's hard to tell.

A slight difference in pimp factor
;)

Re: FZR600 Build, Updated 2.18.11

Two quick mid week mods. I got some yellow lamin-x for the headlights. I have both done yellow right now, but may go back to a single light covered like in the picture. I can't tell which looks best. Both are awesome in my opinion and give it that vintage enduro racer image. Also took the rubber off of the stock pegs, sandblasted, and powder coated them clear. Looks awesome. I drilled speed holes in the heel plates and will do those clear this weekend as well. I decided the rear spring rate off the R6 shock was too soft for me (there's about a 200# difference), so I'm going to powdercoat the factory FZR spring orange and put it on. I still have to do the rear brake line, but after all that, the chassis is finished! Now it's just putting the gearbox in along with an EBC clutch and it can all start going back together.

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

I like the yellow and clear combo, something different. It'll probably be hell on the eyes of other motorists, but screw 'em, it looks damn cool!

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

Very cool man. Love the vintage racer look (and performance!) Where did you pick up the headlight film?

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

its always interesting to see the work of somone that knows what the hell they are doing.. id assume alot of us around here do alot of the shooting from the hip.

cool ride

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

Bob- I think I agree on the single. Something a little odball and different.

Von- Check out https://www.lamin-x.com/ you can get vehicle specific or universal film. It's really high quality and thick stuff. I've used it on several vehicles.

Beard- That's a hell of a compliment, cheers.

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

I got the rest of the stuff powdercoated that I needed to. I did the stock rear spring orange and the passenger pegs and heel plates in clear. They all came out great. Didn't get anything really accomplished this past weekend since I spent most of Saturday drinking, smoking cigars, eating steak, and powdercoating. Yeah, it was a good weekend.

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

It's looking great so far. I used to have an FZ600. Temperamental bastard but loved going fast.

Re: FZR600 Build, Yellow headlights FTW

Looks awesome man, nice job! Definitly looking forward to watching this build. The pics look great.

Re: FZR600 Build, Grrrrrrr

Ever have those shitty weekends in the shop? This one definitely qualified. I've been mobbed at work all week so was already beat and not wanting to do much. I decided to tackle swapping the rear spring on the R6 shock to the original FZR spring to get the rates back to where they should be. I spent about 1 hour hacking up a set of mcphearson spring comressors to work on a motorcycle rear shock, and ended up saying f*ck it after about 2 hours of trying to get the R6 spring off. I eventually did get it off, unfortunately leaving my rear shock a little sorry looking  . I decided to cut my losses and just get the proper tool off e-bay for 30 bucks and attempt to do it at a later time. As you all know the right tools make all the difference. Better luck next time.

My buddy Chad helped me out by sandblasting my header at his place and shooting it with a fresh coat of paint. The one good thing to happen to the bike this weekend.

Re: FZR600 Build

Finally had time to work on the bike a bit. I've had a lot going on these past few weeks but with the temperature bumping up into the 50's I'm highly motivated to get this thing finished. Today I put the rear brake line on, safety wired the heel plates and the master cylinder bolts. As I write this I realize I forgot to do the rear caliper bolts, note to self. I also got the rear wheel bearings in along with new seals, and fabbed up a mount for the front master reservoir. It's not really in an ideal spot, but it just clears the fairing brace so I guess it will have to do. I just need to make sure it leaves a clear line of sight to the tach. I also got some clear indicator lenses which are surprisingly good quality for $12. They look much nicer than the orange ones and will be a nice cosmetic addition.

I got my new spring compressors and after with fucking with the stock FZR spring, I've convinced myself that it's not meant to be. The spring is real strong at 728# and about a 1/2" longer than the R6 spring. I ordered a hyperco spring at a rate of #700 and the proper length. The lesson in all this? Spend the money and do it right the first time instead of being a cheap bastard.

Re: FZR600 Build, Hooray for progress!

Tell me about the led gauge lights.
My son had an FZR. I cut it in half and installed a 99 r6 tail and subframe. FZR400 swingarm, R6 front and rear brakes, misc. other stuff. It had a Works rear shock and Progressive parts in the front. It was a good bike to ride. Your project is coming along fine.
