Been Around the Block
because I just cannot leave things alone, I decided to see if I could clean this thing up a bit. The rubber seal was shredded so you won't see it in any pics.
This image shows what it looks like before I soaked it in Evapo Rust. At this point I was only going to soak it to get the rust off then put a new seal on.
This is after soaking. The rust is gone, but it still looks like shit. also when I rinsed it off, I noticed there was a lot of nasty stuff washing out from indide of the assembly.
This is how the assembly pops out of the cap. I just used an awl and took my time to pry it out. I suppose I could have used something a little less sharp and pointy, but it's the underside of the fucking cap and I'm probably going to refinish it anyway.
I drilled out the center rivet and found this. Holy shit, I want that stuff nowhere near my soon to be clean fuel tank.
This is after wire brush, soaking in Evapo Rust then cleaning all parts.
FInally, I assembled things back together using a screw and lock nut. Should work like new.
FYI, to remove the pins that hold the cap to the tank, you can just use a nail set and hammer them out. By doing this they can be reused as they can be re-flared when everything goes back together - I did not do this and only realized that after the fact. Oh well, I'' just get a small stainless screw, a locknut and a couple nylon washers and it will do the same thing.
