Gear selection issue

Gday Guys and Girls,

After some help with an issue im having. The engine i have transplanted into my bike is having some problems with gear selection, It will only select 1st and Neutral. I figured it was probably a clutch issue so i cracked the cases and put in fresh friction plates but no go, will still only select Neutral and First. Am going to try swapping out the whole clutch basket tomorrow and see how that goes. Any ideas on what else it could be? It's a 1980 GSX250 engine.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Not at the moment, the clutch side cover is off. However previously, yes, the engine was running whilst i was trying to select gears, and would run fine in Neutral and would move into 1st although it was a bit sticky, just wouldn't push up into 2nd. The previous engine selected gears fine whether running or not. I do have the transmission from that bike that i can use, i would just prefer to avoid a full rebuild, so seeking advice here first.

The stickiness of 1st was what led me to believe that it was a clutch issue, ill try to swap out the whole clutch assembly tomorrow and see what comes of that.

If the engine is in the bike and the drive chain is connected, you can rock the bike back and forth and try to upshift then. Or put the bike on the centrestand and spin the rear wheel whilst shifting gears.

A lot of bikes will not want to shift up into 2nd gear and beyond if the output shaft is stationary. That is quite normal.

Haha yeah i actually learnt this last night while fitting the replacement clutch basket, Man, didn't I feel like a dick that i didn't know that, cheers for your help though mate, appreciate it.

On the plus side though ive replaced the clutch plates and springs, cleaned out a lot of the gunk from the engine sitting for so long and sheared two clutch cover bolts to learn this information.
