Gn250 starter motor issue

replaced the dying starter motor recently on my gn, however instead of starting everything just spins but doesn't engage, it bump starts fine but when I try to use the starter it just sounds like and electric drill. is there something simple ive done or do I need to replace the starter clutch?

Sounds like you may have somehow mis-aligned / disengaged the starter clutch idler gear.


Did you take the crankcase cover off when you replaced the starter motor?

i have had the whole engine apart several times ( last owner managed to drop some bolts in the case ) and thought the same thing at first but ive spun it with the case off and held the idler in, it just doesn't want to engage.
