Gonna try my hand

Figured I'd try my hand at working some fiberglass to build a seat for my CB125 since I haven't found anyone who produces them. Who knows maybe I'll find a new market to get in to, I'm getting tired of working on cars anyway. Good luck to me!

Got my measurements and all that good stuff, just trying to decide now whether to do it square or round... I think I'm gonna make one of each and try em both out to see how it looks, why not I got the time?

i like when the tail piece follows the lines of the tank... if the tank is boxy do a boxy tail if the tank is round, round the tail... helps the lines flow a bit better

I've designed a bit of a boxy round tail. I'll post some pictures tomorrow night. Been taking the photos with my new phone and I left it at the shop tonight so the pics will have to wait.

well here's what I have so far. I tried the floral foam method out. It's really messy but easy to work with. I just glued it to some cardboard for now so I could get a basic idea how it'll look with the measurements I took from the bike. It sorta reminds me of a mailbox but that's ok.

I have the fiberglass and the resin to finish it off. Hopefully it's nice for the rest of this weekend so I don't have to do it in the kitchen. I just used some white glue to "seal" the foam so it doesn't collapse when I put the resin on. I'll definitely post pictures of the process just to show what kind of a mess I can make when I put my mind to it.

Looks to me like you're doing fine so far... really enjoying watching your progress. Let us know how things turn out with the resin...

It's the polyester type of resin. I sealed the blocks with some white Elmer's glue so hopefully I don't end up with a pile of resin mush when I'm finished. I'm looking for an LED light and so far the best I've come up with is in the pic below. Hopefully I can find a way to make it work with my 6V system. The stock lights are really chunky and kinda dim.
Nevermind, took the pic with my phone and it didn't save. It's just an oval shaped trailer LED that I found at Autozone. I think it'll look good though.

If you haven't started yet, throw on another coat of the Elmers. I screwed the pooch on a little fairing last week, the resin found its way in and undercut me, turned out real crappy and may have contributed to the resin never curing. Oh well, it was just a test piece.

Too late got the cloth on already. I never thought about it when I started but I used the foam type brushes and after about 10 minutes they started to melt with the resin on them. It was kinda cool watching the reaction but I got finished without any serious problems. Gonna let it cure the rough it up and put on another layer of glass. It looks ok so far or at least not bad for my first attempt, gonna take a lot of sanding and filler I have a feeling but I'll have a decent custom tail when I'm done.

looking great! i just got mine down to the final stages... the milkshake mixture is life saving near the end... mixed bondo and resin together and painted it on... saved me HOURS of sanding
