Long time lurker ready to get my feet wet and knuckles busted...

found this ad on craiglist, guy wants $650, but probably will take less:

1971 HONDA CB 750 THIS BIKE HAS BEEN IN DRY STORAGE FOR YEARS , IT WILL NEED WORK. IT RAN WHEN IT WAS PARKED 18 YEARS AGO. CLEAR TITLE.

he also said: "NO I DIDN'T TRY TO START IT , BECAUSE IT NEEDS A NEW BATTERY. I DON'T WANT TO BUY ONE ,BECAUSE I WANT TO SELL IT. I'AM SURE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WORKS , IT IS COMPLETE.. THE SPEEDO SHOWS 40K ON THE ODOMETER."

sorry for the caps lock.

THANKS!!

What's a good price?! $500?!

Here's another, sounds like it will be easier to get runnin', but....1980 Honda CB 750 F Super Sport

description: "I have not driven it in 6 months. It will not start at this time. I am not sure why, I have not tried to fix it. I am sure it is probably just a fuse. The tank is clean, the battery is not a year old and is charged and the electrical turns on. I want to move this as soon as possible but will not under sell myself.

I am asking 600.00 for it as is.

It may sound cheap, but since its only this bike and you have no idea what it will take to get it road ready I would start at $350 and see how it goes from there.

Craigslist clientele are always hillarious!!

...what do you recommend the pull the trigger threshold to be?

At least stomp on the kicker to see if the engine isn't stuck. If it is, run away. If it turns, offer $100 and settle on $200. The bike is junk and every nut, bolt, o-ring and gasket is seized.

Glad I wasn't the only one that thought it was overpriced. ;)

Keep looking. That is way too much for that bike.

The nice thing about craigslist (and CB750s) is if you are patient you will be able to find a good bike at a good price. Another good way to get an idea of what a bike should sell for (a rough idea, because the same bike's worth will vary depending on where it is selling) is to look on www.crazedlist.org. This will give you all of the craigslist listings for a region at once. Many of the sellers will be dreaming, but eventually you will start to see what a good ballpark is for the type of bike you want.

Good luck

agreed man, unless you really want to put in some time, and i mean full motor rebuild and all that crap, offer 100 not more... as said 200 if it is not locked up... would make a great parts bike.. hell i would prob buy it to polish parts/ powder them for resale... but that is about it... it is BS if they tell you it ran 18 years ago...

Good call not buying that one. But keep at it, when you do find a good cb750(almost running) at a good price(almost free). It'll be worth the wait. I looked for one for two years before I came across mine.

Good advise all! 8)

Riding an old bike can be costly enough wihout spending too much to start with! Spread the word that you're looking for a bike. You never know who might pop up with a deal through, "a friend of a friend"! These things fall into your lap sometimes if you're patient! ;)

Oh ya. The more bikes you look at, the more you'll learn about what's 'right' and what's 'wrong'!

Be patient. It'll happen! ;D
