Good Trade???

I would have to know the condition of the 2 vehicles to be honest. Honestly i love the 80's rabbit gti's, supposed to be great cars and great on gas too. If its in good condition i would say base your decision on what would be more pratical and useful to you. Remember though an older car is going to require maintenace on a few thing just because with age comes deteriation, especially with joints and rubber bushing and the like. After a while that can get kinda taxing on your wallet. But if it has had regular maintenance and has been kept up properly in all aspects i would say go for it if it meets your needs.

yes... anything has gotta be better than a chevy... like ive always said.. I woud rather have the clap than a chevy, because the clap at least runs..

but honestly.. I would want some boot with that trade..

If the rabbit is clean I would do it in a heart beat.. That was one of my favorite cars I've ever owned..
There a few problems that could come out and kill you though.. The rabbits had issues with water dripping on the fuse box and frying it, it happened to me and it sucks.. Just look around online to get a better idea of the issues that you may have to deal with and decide if you feel like tackling them..

Thanks for the insight guys. The rabbit is German spec and was tuned by ABT in Germany before it was imported to the us in 84. Full suspension package, exhaust, discs all around. My sonoma is pretty stock. V6 vortec 4.3 with 149xxx miles it's an extended cab and has a taneau cover. Also the rabbit only has 21xxx km on it maybe that'd a typo for 210xxx I'm not sure.

So it's a grey market car? I have a euro spec volvo 740 wagon.

If they can back up their claims, and the car is solid, I would do it in a heartbeat. post some pics!

Since its a gray market car, first off i would make sure its legally registerable before you make the trade. I would want a copy of the current registration so i could have it checked out. I know that sounds kinda shitty and i know this is americus, but i beleive you said your going to atlanta and if they find that the registration isn't legal you could find your car being impounded and possibly crushed. I know thats an extreme case scenario, but i would hate for you to go through crap like that.

Edited: But if everything checks out, I'd be all over that shiz!

The Golf will appreciate in value potentially if you maintain it and keep it perfect / improve it. The truck will depreciate to its value in scrap metal in another 10 years. It will never be a classic worth keeping alive and has all sorts of fancy computers to keep alive (I presume).

The Golf should be easier to keep, likely has a huge enthusiast following who can tell you how to throw hopped up engines in it etc. and being a German import, it has a certain cache being from the mother-land.

So yeah, if the Golf is in excellent shape, why not? You only live once.

I don't want to sound like an A-hole but that car does not look (pics don't do justice) like it was tuned by Abt or even German made (maybe made in Mexico), my advice is to contact people over at vwvortex and I bet someone knows this car. I used to be a vw nut, loved the gti's and gli's, I had a 91 jetta gl and I still own a 97 jetta gl (daily driver) I have put over 83,000 miles in 14 years and the car runs strong.

grey market just means it wasn't imported via traditional methods. If it has a legit state issued title and registration, you'll be fine. See if they can back up their claims with documentation, then start digging into the mechanical condition of the car. Is it going to be your daily driver?

Gotcha yeah it's going to be my daily driver. The guy says it currently registered and insured in GA. I should be goin up to Atl to check it out tomorrow or Thursday.

If it runs, is rust free (check the hatch, they rust around the latch and lock cylinder) and was really tuned as stated, that car is BADASS. I had a chance at a running 86 GTI 16v for $200 a few years back and am still kicking myself. Needed a new interior, but who cares? Anyhow... If its as advertised that will be one of the most enjoyable cars you'll ever own.

^^^ what he said. A well sorted first gen GTi is so fun... like a good, small displacement, classic bike, you don't have to be going 150mph to enjoy it.

Ok so I'm not gonna be able to look at the car till after labor day cause the owner is on vacation but he just sent me some more detailed picks of the car. Lemme know what you guys think.

The 1984 GTI is still to this day one of my favorite cars.

As stated, if that car is in good running nick, and rust free, do it now!

The engine pretty much looks stock, was hoping to see carbs or a 16V engine in it :( Do you know how much he is asking for the car? I think you should be walking away with some cash.
