Got my first bike!

After months of lurking on this forum, I finally have a reason to post - I got my first bike! I am the proud owner of an '81 Yamaha XS250 that idles beautifully but does all sorts of weird and wonderful things when you give it some throttle. "All she needs is a tune up and she'll be right mate" Well that is what the guy said that I bought the bike from. But, once I got it home I had a really good look at it and realised that it needs a hell of a lot more than just a tune up - and so the build up journey begins. One thing is for sure - it will never, ever, be bike of the month but I wont let that stop me enjoying fixing her up. I would really appreciate any input and suggestions on what to do the bike.
