GR650 top end clean up

Hmmm...compression at 85 in one cylinder and 80 in the other....oil weeping from the front side of head gasket...time to get to wrenchin'. Pulled the head and here's the beauty that greeted me. This is only one side, the other was already on the bench

All other things being equal, a good dose of carbon on top of a piston will increase your compression figures. But, your rings are no doubt shot....


What's going on with that stud on the outer side? Looks like someone's tried to weld it in place??
 
It's just that filthy...I really don't think it's ever been this far apart...new rings ready to go, gaskets, cleanin up the chambers and surfaces

put the plugs in and pour kerosene or gasoline into the combustion chambers and see how much leaks out of the ports. That's a cheap and cheerful test to see if the valves seal.
 
once I got the build up cleaned out and everything nice and shiny they seemed well seated, but, I used that same test-but with gasoline instead...very slow seepage-as in barely any...I'm still new to all this, so I truly appreciate the advice. Thank you!
 
All back together and running...pods are temporary experimentation not permanent application-still have the airbox and snorkels on the shelf...Now if the weather would just be agreeable for some real testing...too cold in NY to tune a carb. The emgo rev cone exhaust already had me forced up two sizes on the main jet and one on the pilot, I guess it's goimg to be a "wait and see" approach...hoping to do the Meltdown this year...

The pod experiment has been scrapped...airbox re-installed,side covers back on...now to find somewhere local to match the paint on the fairing..
