Green Hornet CB 550/650 Hybrid #2014 Footage Compilation

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #kickstarter vs rearsets....

I am curious too. I pm a guy named viet about getting some rear sets a while ago for my 350 he stated that his rear sets would work if I switched to a 450 kicker. So i am thinking the 450 kicker must be shorter??? Just a thought. Look forward to your solution.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #kickstarter vs rearsets....

That sounds interesting, I'll collect some information about your suggestion.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #kickstarter vs rearsets....

with my rear sets mount it to the passenger footpegs mounts I'm able to still kick the bike over, just carefully though.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #kickstarter vs rearsets....

Are you running foldable footpegs? I am using the pegs that forum member DurgamK is selling. I mounted them on custom mounts on my CB450, and folded up the kicker clears the peg.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #kickstarter vs rearsets....

The electric starter is very reliable, and these bikes (cb500, 550, and 750's) are super dupper easy to push start if need. I just took the kick starter off mine, but I still keep it around. I'll throw it on so i can turn the engine over by hand while I'm setting the points and what not.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #seat joints/ alloy rims

I'm in a great depression. Tried to work on the seat and everything seems to look like rubbish. Bothering myself about dents and mock-welds... Wondering if its possible to powdercoat it. Sometimes I'm just about to throw the whole bike into the next bush. Know, that this will be a heavy throw  :'(

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #seat joints/ alloy rims

Hey guys,

need some experiences here.

Yesterday I started to cut my plastic front fender into the right shape. It's not finished yet, but I'll go on when I'm finished with its mounting brackets.

Since it wasn't a Honda fender, the original bracket did not fit into my fork. I made some aluminium brackets which still need to be cutted and filed into the right form. Moreover, the fender is not mounted as high as on the pics, the brackets still need to be bend, so the result is a height about 20mm over the tire.

But the point is: Do I need some connection between the brackets under or over the fender (bail?), or will it work just to rivet each bracket directly to the fender?

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #forged alloy handlebars

Got a tidbit today,

New forged alloy handlebars. Light as hell, very well manufactured.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #forged alloy handlebars

Since the fender brackets does not fit my CB 550 properly, I decided to go with selfmade ones.

Here's the result after a bit of cutting, filing and bending of 4mm alloy sheets.
These will be riveted together with the fender. As far as I tried out, they provide great strength.

Moreover my baby tried her new handlebars on:

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #selfmade fender brackets

Looking good. I love clip ons.

How many builds have you done? You have some good ideas floating around that head of yours! Really like that trapezoid seat cover, came out nicely.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #selfmade fender brackets

Thank you.

This is my first bike and also my first build. Restored a 50ccm moped before, but nearly without own changes.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #selfmade fender brackets

Today I spend some time on stripping down my 2nd engine, with some great and some less great surprises...it nearly matched with my first impression when seeing 23 different kinds of screws placed to fix the head... but see yourself.

Some pics on the progress first:

Unfortunately one bolt broke in the head, will have to bore it out.
Cam's bearings look O.K.

Just minor wear on the chain tensioner.

07082012630.jpg

Some pitting on the cam :/ which left marks on the very right rocker.

Rust in the first cylinder liner. It even attacked first the piston ring.

Finally splitted the case and pulled the crank out.

Crank's bearings look usable on both sides. The crank itself does not have any pitting or wear.

The pistons after a short ultrasonic bath. It turned out that the piston rings have tooo much clearance. I really don't know if I should use them for my first engine. New pistons will explode my budget...

The point is, that I have to drive with 34hp for the next two years after I will have gotten (hopefully next month if I get enough time for my last driving lessons...) my motorcycle license here in Germany.

Tell me about experiences using pistons with much clearance and your experiences rebuilding well running engines on low budget.

Oette

CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #Update# license plate holder

Got a license plate holder to mount it before the whole seat will be powdercoated. It still needs some arms for indicators, I'll see what I'm able to do out of some aluminium.

Check it out, what do you think does it look like?

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #Update# license plate holder

Coming together nicely. Do you need arms for indicators or could you alter your seat and integrate them? Perhaps simple LED bars running the underside or top of plate?

This will look nice coated.

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #Update# license plate holder

This build is starting to look real nice. How long did it take to pull apart that engine?

Thank you, I'm doing my best here with my first build!
I had disassembled one engine before so it took about 4 hours :D Totally overestimated myself carrying the motor from my garage down into the cellar. I ended up stopping halfway on the garden table, heading through the disassembling to get finished and carry all parts separately into the cellar just before the rain started.

I thought of a solution like that, but it will be a problem to run it street legal here. My solution for the moment will be to bend some indicator arms out of an alloy profile and attach it to the license plate holder.

I'm looking forward to get the frame, seat and swingarm powdercoated and the motor beadblasted next week. This step will lead me to some electrical work and the preparation of the seat to get coated.
Everyday I'm thinking of the right colour scheme.
My current favourite one is a candy or metallic green like this

with 2 asymmetric black stripes and black coated knee dents on the tank. But I'm still attracted by some orange like this, too..

Re: CB 550 K Cafe Racer Conversion #Update#

I have a remark. I'd be worried about finding head gaskets in the future.
