Hey guys been a lurker for a long time now, love this site for inspiration! It seems much more active than the forum for my actual bike... My bike is a 1980 Yamaha XS850, story goes I've always been a huge gear head, always into cars... I never knew anyone with a bike, but slowly the want for a bike grew to strong! Flash forward to last year I was 19, and driving my little $400 Dollar Focus around, Its a nice car, I just used it for a DD while I built my car project... Anyway I remember I kept driving to get the best MPG actually got 36 average! (it was a 5 speed). Anyway I just remember thinking "Wait.. What the Fu@k! What am I doing?? Driving a Focus! and Driving it slow to get good MPG!" So that was it... I jumped on Craigslist and found a guy selling a bike who wanted to trade for a car!!! Yay! I drove out to detroit about an hour away, a fell in love.. It was a 1980 Yamaha XS850 Triple, the bike was a 1 owner, looked perfect, and had excellent documented history. So like any 19 year old with half a brain, I threw him the keys to my Focus, hoped on the bike rode to the nearest parts store for a battery, and rode it all the way home!!! I had taken a riders course a year prior, but this bike weighed 3x as much, had 3x the power, and I never rode on the street... Let alone the highway!!! It was so great though!!!! My parents weren't to impressed and beat my ass pretty good haha they warmed up, and last summer alone I put 4,000 miles on it!!!
When I got the bike it was honestly ugly as hell, with a thick seat, ugly bars, and a giant fairing.....
I've slowly done some modifications, this bike is still a big tourer so I had to keep it comfy for long rides with my girl... But this is pretty much how she is now! I used the stock seat, but shaved it myself and had it professionally wrapped. Made my own exhaust using the stock pipes, came out cool, but tuning it sucks, I'm re-doing the exhaust as I type this.
