Hey guys,
I've been reading the DTT forums for a while now, for the most part it seems like there is a ton of very knowledgable people on the forums. So I have come here to ask a few questions if it's okay, I would like to pick the brains of the DTT crew..
So I will start from the beginning I have really liked the idea of buying a vintage street bike, doing some work to it to make it mine, and having something really neat and different to ride with some of my family and friends. So I started looking I knew in General what I wanted and what I had to spend. I found a 1980 Suzuki GS550 that was running with a clean title, and just under 20k miles. I bought it and had it tagged and insured next day.
Now onto a couple problems I have observed in the just over 200 miles I have put on the bike. It seems to be running very lean. The P.O put pods on the bike and I am thinking he didn't feel a rejet was necessary. The conditions I'm getting that makes me feel like it's running lean are, light surging while trying to hold highway speeds at about 4k rpms, very clean plugs no brown tint to the plugs at all, holding a higher idle ones she gets warm, and it will rev right to redline with no load but once under a load it doesn't want to get above 6500 rpms when under a load.
I have decided it will probably be best not to ride the bike until I rejet. So I am buying my new mufflers and then will do a rejet so the questions I was looking for the answers are am I correct is are my carbs a CV type BS 22? Where is the best place to buy quality jets? Does anyone have a good starting point on jets for this bike with pods and a fairly non restrictive set of mufflers, I am at a near sea level elevation. Also would it be bad to try to jet my bike in October/November weather?
Side note I will be adjusting the valves before I attempt to mess with the carbs. Not sure where I should get gaskets from.
I would appreciate any and all advice thanks for taking the time to read my post.
