GS1000 budget build

Probably not the most conventional choice of bike for a café build but the shaft was what I wanted, besides the extra capacity of the motor is best suited to our riding conditions. The bike was in a bit of a state when I picked it up but it did come cheap and actually started.

Some pics of the strip down

Started on the front forks and realized that they were badly rusted inside, also stripped down motor and found poor repair job on seized gudgeon pin, after a bit of shopping around I was lucky to find another motor in hopefully a decent state, also picked up a set of R6 front forks, bad news is that the standard yokes are not same diameter so picked up another set of yokes and got a 17 inch front wheel off a Honda, while I was at it I got a set of rear sets from a Honda 1000rr and a radial master cylinder off a K5 Suzuki

Finished cutting off all the unwanted brackets from the frame and mounted steering damper and drilled and tapped holes for rear sets and mocked up R6 front end

Finished prepping frame and got some colour on, the lighting and pic quality does not do the colour justice

Next up I have to rebuild and paint front forks and yokes, cleaning up the motor is also becoming a priority now, will keep the pics coming as I go along

Thanks for the interest, still a long way to go on this one, cut and matched up the foot peg brackets today, also started prepping the new yokes for painting, I hit a big luck in that the stock GS headstock bearings will fit the new yokes perfectly.

Thanks, rear sets came off a 2008 model, nice thing about them is that after a bit of work the 2 sides look almost identical, it does help though that I decided to ditch the rear brake

GS1K is one of my favs. a workhorse and dead reliable. A low pressure motor that will always bring you home. As far as the shaft drive hey, BMW's are such and many make cafe bikes from them. Interesting so far keep it up.
Cheers, 50gary

Got some work done today, 2nd coat of paint went on frame, didn't come out as perfect as i wanted it but it will be ok after a bit of polishing, then tried to polish final gear hub which was an epic fail, as seen in pic there seems to be harder metal particles embedded in casting, don't know if it could be sand from the casting process, anyway I will paint it.
I decided against painting the rear sets and the yokes and started polishing them, they coming along nicely.
I was disappointed to find most of the suppliers closed today, festive season is not a good time for building bikes, only thing I could get today was a set of new neck bearings from a local bearing supplier, at least I should be able to assemble the yokes tomorrow and I have the forks to rebuild.
First pic is the failed polishing of the final drive hub and the others of todays progress

Rewind the tape - I've been disconnected for a couple of days. Is that a Smurf theme paint job? I think that's a first.

By painting over that "Smurf" themed bike you have done humanity a service, and in time for Christmas. You are a Gentleman and a Scholar! Bike looks good to, that is a lot of grunt, should be a blast.
