GS450 1979,81,82 cafe project.

This was an expirement to see if I could get running, and it sprouted a life of its own and took over my interest. This summer i picked it up off CL close to my house for really cheap. It didn't run, seat was not mounted, tank was not mounted, it was a piece of "YARD ART" mostly. Took it home and mostly tinkered with it. After about 3 hours of fixing wiring and cleaning carbs, contacts and new spark plugs. IT WAS ALIVE. Here are pics from the first day.

New carb manifolds installed today, need to figure out a better way to support the carbs from the frame so the rubber gasket doesn't take the full force of the carbs vibrating.

Thanks for looking, we will see what happens next.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Looking for new tires. Anybody have any suggestions for inexpensive tires. I realize tires are a very important piece of the motorcycle puzzle but this is not an everyday driver, and by no means a 100mph bike. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

front is a 110/90/19
rear is spaced for larger tire,a 130/90/16

thanks.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

WINTER PROJECT UPDATE,
The project began about a month ago, the bike has been torn down and a new frame and tires have been found. Going with GS850 spoke rear and a GS250 spoke front. Will add pictures tonight of current progress.
This is a large build for me and alot of things are changing on the bike, as they should.

sorry for the update to the old thread, but I figured it was good to keep it all together.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Lookin' good. Those spokes are a huge improvement over those ugly cast wheels. I still have a set that I can't even give away.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

HAHA, well I have a set for sale! Iam gona stop by a motorcycle swap meet this weekend and see if I can unload them on someone.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Gs450s are good bikes!!!!

Love the home made rear sets....... well done

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Big thanks to mark13018 for the wire for my new harness. Great deal if anyone needs 11 different colors for a custom harness of their own..

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Thanks Mike, Your bike looks good man. Those rear sets are nice, amazing you have access to equipment and are able to do stuff like that. That's perfect for the bike building stuff... I love the gauge mount too. That's a brilliant idea. I may be stealing that one as my cl450 with the cb450 triple tree resulted in a mounting bracket that is no good. I am thinking of mounting the tach in the middle there like yours and my speedo off the right side fork tube right below the fork boot/gaiter. Only reason being that in Indiana the law requires any bike made after like 1953 or something to be equipped with a speedometer... I seen a guy from hondatwins forum that had his mounted there and it looked surprisingly good and still within sight while driving... Nice looking bike though. I've owned a few gs models and they're nice.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

HA HA I love those Enkei mags, they rock! They are very high quality wheels. I bought them for my Yamaha RT dirt bike to cafe conversion.
The GS 450 tank is a great cafe type tank, I always keep an eye out for one.
Cheers, 50gary

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Looking for as good deal on a headlight. Mine has a dent in the bulb ring. Been looking at DCC but nothing has jumped out at me. Any other suggestions?

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project. gs750 front end conversion

1983 GS750sz Katana front end with dual disc & antidive purchased. New parts from DCC will arrive today and the build resumes this weekend.

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

Battery tray finished up.
I plan on using a ANTIGRAVITY 4 cell battery from DCC, I need to make sure my electrical system is working correctly before I do that. I have been looking into building a Battery protection circuit to cut the current from the stater above 14.v volts. Have any of you guys messed with voltage regulators or zener diode circuits for battery protection over your stock R/R?

Re: GS450 1981' cafe project.

New front end FITS.

After referencing part numbers and using GS resources, I was able to install the front end last night. The 1983 GSX750sz front end I picked up off CL works perfectly.

The GOOD
-36mm fork
-Dual Disc
-ANTI Dive
-smooth top triple clamp.

The Bad
-need to make an odd size spacer on opposite side of speedo drive to center wheel.

I am very pleased, now just need to clean it up.

I'm not familiar with the gs450 electrical system, But take a look at ricks motorsports They have R/R for your bike.

I'm running a small shorai battery and upgraded my stator and R/R. only had it in a few days but so far so good voltage dosnt go over 14
