GS450 Intake modification

Rich - do the GS500 carbs have ovaled intakes on the filter side? Can you mount pods to them?

Or, can you mount the 500 rubbers to them and mate them to the 450 airbox?

They have oval shaped intakes, but still accept pod filters. Matter of fact, K&N makes a filter specifically for the GS500:

When comparing the 1980 GS450 carbs to early GS500 carbs, the intakes are definitely different sizes. So the airbox boots won't fit the the GS500 carbs. Another problem is the size front to back between each set - the GS500 carbs aren't as "long" .... so the airbox boots won't reach them even if they were the same size.

One thing I do remember now: the GS500 carbs were a few POUNDS lighter than the 450 carbs. Holding each set in your hands, you would think the 450 carbs were made of cast iron or something.

Cool! I will make sure to keep that all in mind.

I do have to ask though, do i HAVE to have the choke bit for the left-hand control? Or can i set up a remote or carb-mounted choke control?

Because if i have to buy all the extra bits, its not gonna be worth the swap, because that would cost more then just a new pair of Mikuni 34's. With the s4's i don't have to change anything, just hook it up and go.

Well, you don't "need" the left hand control. You can reach down and operate the choke by hand, but the cable makes it much easier to start up.

And btw, 34's are generally considered too big for a 450. VM32's or even 30's would be better suited. And you would still have to get the throttle cable to work with whatever control you're using.

Something else worth mentioning: the late model GS500 right hand control has a momentary kill switch for the headlight when you press the starter button. That way the current for the headlight gets directed to the starter motor.

Left switch/control is same on all pre 97 Katana's, you get remote choke operation. Lot more of them around than GS500
