GS450-rear mudguard opinions and advice

Re: gs450-destroying an Emgo..Paint finally finished page 30

Gary, if you want to hold off on the pod filters, I'm going to try to fit some GS500 carbs soon. Filters for them are generally pretty cheap, and easy to come by......

Just something to think about.

Re: gs450-destroying an Emgo..Paint finally finished page 30

Rich,
Are the 500 carbs VM or CV? or are you saying you may have a set of filters to fit the BS34's I have? I really would like to eventually get away from the CV carbs for something with much better response (especially on the 450). Let me know what your thinking, I'm always up for good ideas (and suggestions on cheap places to get them). The complete carb swap and rejetting to 500's may have to wait a season if I don't get on it before weather starts to break though.

Re: gs450-destroying an Emgo..Paint finally finished page 30

Sorry G, I should have specified:

From everything I've seen, the 500 carbs (with matching intake boots) should bolt right onto the 450's head. They are CV carbs, but don't have the standard round slides like your stockers. They are flat slides. Since they come from Suzuki on the lean side of the jetting (emissions regulated) for a 500cc motor, they should work fairly well for a free flowing 450cc motor. I'm sure they will need some fine tuning of course......but probably no more than your stock carbs. Make sense?

If you search on eBay for GS500 carbs, you'll notice essentially two types - pre 2002 and 2004 to 2012. There are some differences between the years......but all of them should work with varying degrees of work.

Edit: forgot to add- Google K&N lunchbox filters. They are made specifically for GS500 carbs. I guarantee they don't fit in the 450 frame as they do a 500 frame but.......we are resourceful! And great job on that paint btw!

Re: gs450-destroying an Emgo..Paint finally finished page 30

Paint looks great, nice metalics...
New aluminum and rubber grips are in (fairly certain that they are too blingy and I dont like them),
You got a pic? If they are the ones I am thinking of, I may take them off your hands if you want to get rid of them...

Check the reflection, I'd swear you are holding a picture of Elvira Mistress of the Dark.

Wanted these:

received these with the above pictured end caps. may just take a paint marker and dot in the little shiney area. May just say screw it..

The aluminum little plug cap on the grips was going to go away to make room for my new shiney black bar end mirrors anyway. Same style as whats pictured on the bike but will blend in better.

Thanks Rich! Let me know how the carb swap over works. If they are still CV carbs are the flatsides that much better? (i really am not a carb guy). What would be the overall benifit? Where would I look for a set? Would I be better to wait and get in on a group buy for a set of VM carbs? I assume I wouldn't be able to go with the same jetting on the VM and would be starting over again from scratch??

I am full of questions. I NEVER want a new shiney cookie cutter bike until it comes time to get the carbs right. Then like KOPCICLE says I should justpoke a hot drill bit in my eye. It would be less painful.

There are plenty of advantages to flat slides - basically it boils down to performance. There are plenty of sets of carbs on eBay, but I'm working on a package deal from a guy in Seattle. If I end up with a spare set, I can hook you up.

Jetting between Mikuni VM's and the CV's would really be completely different. Swapping between the two and figuring out what you need for the other ......would be a helluva challenge.

While VM's are generally easier to tune, they tend to be more finicky to outside changes (temperature, altitude, etc). CV's are more challenging to tune properly, but are less effected by outside changes. Like I said earlier though, the stock jetting in carbs from a GS500 would be REALLY close to what you would need right off the bat.

Re: gs450-destroying an Emgo..Paint finally finished page 30

The paint on the fairing and fender came out awesome, sweet color.

Re: gs450-destroying an Emgo..Paint finally finished page 30

Thanks!
Its a charcoal black metallic. I'm not 100% happy with how the stripes on the tank and tail came out, I didn't like any of the fairings I've seen with stripes etc. (looked choppy to me). Left the fender and fairing plain and think it will blend in nicely.

i have a set of flush mount smoke led signals that i am thinking of installing However they aren't as "FLUSH" as I would prefer. I think i may go with the rear signals only unless someone can suggest some flush mounts that appeal to me.

Yea Rich If you get the flatsides to work let me know. I would love the better performance while still being close on the jetting.

Re: GS450-S&M- final parts rolling in before winter cleanup and polishing :)

All right final parts rolling in (still waiting on my damper). bike is in a warm garage now. I just have to try to et some time to go and do the final reworks before the mild cleanup can begin. not that these are ever really finished but I am almost to the "done for now" stage. when I get to that point I will have to take some better pics and post up in what used to be the show and shine area.
I can't thank all the DTT members enough for all the help and advice they have given. I am sure there will be more questions, but at least I don't think i am asking the same questions twice. I really look forward to getting to meet some of you in person at the thaw (if i make it), Mid-Ohio, or Barber.

Todays parts haul along with the last painted tin bits and other assorted goodies awaiting installation:

Question is do I use these signals in the fairing? or go without truely front moint signals? I am pretty sure my close fitting signals i have now won't be visible from the direct front. but leaving them on would keep me legal for a DOT inspection in Ohio.If I do install them I am not sure where to get a decent look.

Re: GS450-S&M- final parts rolling in before winter cleanup and polishing :)

G, before you mount those lights, jump them to a battery. Last time I had some eBay signals, the bulbs were 2 different colors (orange & yellow) and they weren't replaceable.

Not that big of a deal, just wanted to mention it.

Re: GS450-S&M- final parts rolling in before winter cleanup and polishing :)

Thanks for the tip Rich. I also found a set of new K&N filters that the K&N site says are the right size for my bike on EGAY for 39.00 for the set. Couldn't pass that up so I am waiting on parts AGAIN. Then back to rejetting.

From what I am told the K&N;s will be much more consistant and may get rid of some of the issues I have been experiancing trying to tune in the cheapies everyone has been talking about.

Fingers crossed.

Re: GS450-S&M- final parts rolling in before winter cleanup and polishing :)

Oil catch can installed for crankcase breather. new hadlight ears, clip ons, and version one of the shaved top triple clamp.

Started sanding on the forks but I have a long way to go on them and the side engine covers. What is the best grit to get a nice brushed finish to match the shock resevour and catch can. They dont have to be poilished up to a chrome like shine since this will be an around town rider?

A little flash of the bike with oil catch can for the crankcase. This is my bikes home for the winter and I am super jealous of the garage, toys, and tools my friend has.

Gary, I found that one of the sanding pads that has scotch brite with it has a nice look to it (it finishes AS it sands) haha It's the one at the top right of the picture, (the smaller sanding thing)

Gary, I've used a steel brush in a drill press, and plain old sand blasting finishes before.
