Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" Stupid intake

Well just a minor update. At a stand still again. I decided to pull the inatek boots off again, replace the mounting hardware with some stainless allen heads and make sure that the new o rings were seated properly.

This time I pulled the old bolts and carbs and upon inspection found the left intake boot to be slightly pulled away from the metal housing. This would explain my increasing idle, and my inability to get my idle to return quickly and as it should.

Time to order some new intake boots and start this process over the right way.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" stupid intake

On the bright side: replace them now and you won't have to worry about them for another 25 to 30 years.

Always a silver lining!

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" stupid intake

And the extra bright side is that you found the problem and you won't be riding around on a shitty running bike scratching your head as to what's wrong with it.

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" stupid intake

Yeah your both right. I had a bad feeling after the idle wouldn't return timely after I replaced the o-rings. When I looked at that originally they looked good and supple. this time not so much. Now I just gotta find the best deal somewhere. No way i wanna buy these from the stealership.

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" stupid intake

Just a small update without pics.

Still waiting on my new intake boots. have what I hope to be the final jets here and waiting.

Nice new Roadracer seat ordered. Thanks Sean (SP?) from RocCityCafe for the call back. Sorry my mind was scattered and kinda off track when you returned my call.

Nicer set of independent guages for a GS850 sourced for use. I will be working on rewiring and soldering these up to the origional harness. Trip meter and Fuel guage will remain intact within the gauges and I will be able to slim down what looked like a giant air brake flap on the front of the bike.

Set of reservoir shocks ordred and still waiting on them to arrive. Mid priced for a budget minded build but a true nitrogen setup so they should be ok. I actually ordered a set this time. (long story).

Lots of odds and ends to do, building this under a car port stinks! I miss my garage BAAAAAAD. First step is to get battery tray mounted up, while waiting on my inatek boots. Second step getting it tuned correctly. Third step could be one of 50 things I have in store.

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" minor updates

A productive Sunday. Finished the final version of my electrical box.

All the goodies are mounted up nice and sound. New intake boots and gaskets (alonf with some stainless Allen mounting hardware. I also worked with the jetting. 122.5 naibs and a little tweaking and she seems to be running great now. still think I may be a little rich. bogs for a split second with a quick twist of the throttle, but after warm up this is issue all but disappeared. I should be able to work this issues out with the mixture screws as soon as I can remember which way to turn them (it;s been a long day).

Mounted up my new nitro shocks (what a difference).

I finished cleaning up the tabs on the frame triangle as well. Looks pretty good to me. I have some aluminum angle that I will be using for the battery box. Got my roadracer seat ordered from Sean at Rovvity this week. I can't really start the battery box and final mounting until I get the seat and am sure of the exact length I will trim the seat to. I have secured a nice LED 2" flush mount truck light and gasket. I have the resistor wired up and will be soldering this when I rewire the GS450 guageplugs to the 850 guages *would have been to easy if it was plug and play.

I have a small green LED which i will be mounting flush in the headlight bucket with a blue and red. Or perhaps I will place them in the new guage base. I am undeccided as of right now.

The front fender has been trimmed and I am working onthe mounting so I will be able to lower it down a little so it will flow better.

Advice issues or critiques welcome. I am stuck with the L tank for now but it is starting to grow on me. New tank and getting the wheel sizes to match will be on the list but are way down the road as of now. budget build and I seem to have more time than money.

I have the 850 guages set and ready for the mounting bracket.

I added an electronic flasher which worked well initially. now for some reason it is giving me the hyper flash. I do not have the rear markers wired up so I am not sure why the flasher went haywire.

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" wiring and leds?

OK, Not alot of suzuki fans or perhaps it is just a slow build compared to somee others with a lil more skill. Either way I press on. Started rewiring the origional star trek gauge cluster over to some GS850 gauges. They are in decent shape and I am not a huge fan of the current mini gauges that are available. Does anyone make gauge face overlays for these? I have seen them for many other brands but not these.

I will be adding to the new cluster LED lighting for the gauges, as well as LED lights for the idiot lights.. This will match the LED turn and brake lights I have purchased, and reduce the overall electrical draw signifigantly.

Cant wait to get my seat fro, Roccity and start on the installation of the tail section and rear lighting.

Advice, tips, tricks, etc welcomed. It is a slow build and may take some time but I like the improvement and direction so far.

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" wiring and leds?

To my knowledge, nobody makes overlays for the gauges. If you find out otherwise, can you post it here though?

Are you just swapping the bulbs out for led bulbs? Superbrightleds.com has a really good selection.

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" wiring and leds?

Thought Sonier made overlays for those might want to ask him . And i find when i dont have the $$ to do something i tend to work on other smaller things like fit and finish stuff till i do have the coin for something . Try thinking ahead of what you want for it and do and prep for it so whenyou get it your ready . As for the over all bike its looking very well done man and remember slow and steady wins the race !
Really like the shocks your running how long are they from eye to eye and what brand are they ?

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" wiring and leds?

I think the gauges on your bike are about the same as mine. I have not seen anyone that makes an overlay for them yet since the zooks are not as "popular" to build or clean up as some other bike manufacturers out there. That being said I am trying to work with a company that makes some overlays for my car to see if they might be able to make a mockup for the bike, started talking with them last week. If it works out I will post it up and let you know!

Re: 83 GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child" wiring and leds?

Shocks are a nitrogen filled ebay find. These are 13 3/8 and seem to be a vast improvement from the 30 year old wonders that were on the bike before. relatively cheap price as well. Link is below.

Slow and steady is the groove I'm in for sure. I have been doing as you stated and kinda working on setup of one area while waiting on money or parts for another one.

I know there was someone on GSresources at one time who had been doing gauge replacements but I can't seem to get ahold of him. I am changing the gauges from the origional large cluster to two individual gauges from a GS850G. I will do some sort of minimalist idiot light cluster as well. The gauges from the 850 turned or are a chocolate brown color on the face. They are clean enough and readable but that is the reason I was asking about overlays. I'll post pictures up as I get more done. From what can tell this should be a quick around town bike (notice I didn't say fast). Not sure why there is a lot bigger custom/rebuild market for the Suzuki's. Sems to be a great bike, although time will tell and it is my first Suzuki.

Re: 83 "Red Headed Step Child"= swapping out to new seat pan and new tank

A little more slow progress so I thought i would update.

Swapped to some GS850 guages with a fuel gauge and led light. I redid the mount and lowered them to meat up with the headlight. Still think i may swap to some mini gauges and a light swith panel similar to Ringo's setup. That set-up is to sexy. I would love to see some more key free gauge cluster setups.

The seat I ordered in a haster looked like a fat girl boinking a skinny guy. I have an interceptor seatordered with Sean at Roccity. It should be much more fitting and help tie in the round and square lines of the tank into the overall look.

beautiful seat bad choice for the bike.

New tank. looks pretty rust free in side. needs a little work outside.

New tank mocked on. no mounts moved.

New tank stripped, dent in the left side filled, sanded and ready for paint.

Front tank mounts relocated about an inch and a half forward from previous picture and about an inch lower. Rear of tank is a vertical mount. old tank was a two bolt horizontal. the rear of the tank is sitting a lil low due to the missing mount setup. I will work on that this week as time allows. If it wasn't for the damn dent I would be tempted to polish and clear and run with it. Starting to look much better.

Anyone with great ideas or pictures of a new tank mount configuration feel free to chime in.

Re: 83 "Red Headed Step Child"= swapping out to new seat pan and new tank

Would a simple "L" bracket work? The frame mounts would just bolt in and stay there, and then weld a nut to the back of the "L" and then you could use bolts horizontally into those. Eh?

Re: 83 "Red Headed Step Child"= swapping out to new seat pan and new tank

Thinking of trying an aluminum L bracket if i can find one that will be of usable demensions. Was hoping someone had some pictures of such a setup. I want to make sure the tank is munted securely.

Re: 83 "Red Headed Step Child"= swapping out to new seat pan and new tank

Ah, Yeah I would be using steel as it's all I can weld on :'( Good luck in your search. Hope you find the right mounting sir, it's going to be one cool lookin' scoot when you are done.
