GS450 "Sport" - Done!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

Thanks Rook. I haven't seen your scoot for a while - how's it coming along?

I pulled the exhaust last night, so hopefully today I can sandblast and paint it.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

Stripped the side panels yesterday and have most of the tank stripped. Running well and stopping correctly (finally--caliper piston was sticking in the seal,) and started working on the tank dent.

May end up selling before I get it done. Always wanted a first-gen SV650 and found one at a price I like. Can't swing both, as much as I want to keep the GR it will likely go. Supposed to pick up the SV early next week (Tues, I think) and the GR will be on the block after that. May keep it long enough to get paint on it.

Against the principles of DTT, so I may get booted :)

Kenda tires mounted to spare wheels:

I've been slacking on the browsing. The bike is looking great with the paint.

Whenever you wanna get rid of those "SPARE" wheels you let me know rich..LOL

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

Rook, I don't think anybody here would blame you. Some people like to ride, some like to wrench. I'm the latter. :)

Gary, I can hook you up with "some" spare wheels. If you want spokers, I can help build them. Getting my spares? Then I've got bad news for you...... :)

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

Sandblasted and painted:

I also got them installed and let the motor idle for 10 minutes to begin the curing process. No pics of them installed however.

Rich,
I may be down for that. PM me what it would take and cost etc. If you got parts we may be able to work something out.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

Shoot me a text tomorrow to remind me. I'll be around the garage then. What are you looking for btw? 18" mags front and rear, spoke wheels, etc?

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

I am already regretting the necessity, but not enough not to get the SV. The GR has been a LOT of fun and I've learned a great deal working on it. (Carb rebuilds no longer scare me ;D.) If I could afford it, it would be in the garage until my kids have to figure out how to sell after probate cleared. Ha!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

Thanks gentleman.

All the "major" stuff is done now. I'll be working on that airbox in my spare time, and cleaning up some small stuff all around. And in July I'll be swapping out the mag wheels for the spoke wheels, but even those aren't permanent.

Wanted to add: with this scoot being complete I can focus more of my time and money on the GR650.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Time for paint!

ABS plastic sucks sometimes......

Last night I tried heating a 9" by 16" sheet around a mold I made from wood. Didn't work at all. The top radii both buckled making sharpish points, and the bottom edges curled upwards. Looks like I'll be cutting smaller pieces up and melting / riveting / glueing them together. But on a positive note, I did get the oil and filter changed at 7000 miles. I've only put 1000 on since the start of the season, but I wanted to get it done since it is a "rebuilt" motor (I use that term very loosely.....).

Found out this morning that this fender extension works flawlessly. And it's getting tested again tonight.....

Re: GS450 "Sport"

Glad it works for you Rich. It has rained non stop here for almost 2 weeks. Fenders are nice when that happens.

Re: GS450 "Sport"

Truth.....

The new fender I have is a couple inches higher in the rear than the stock one. Between that, and the airflow around the base of the cylinders meant that water would just pour back onto my shins / boots. A couple inches makes a huge difference......

Re: GS450 "Sport" - airbox work....

So I did end up making some progress on the air box last night. Just to get it in and out of the frame, the following need removed: carbs, carb mounts, cam chain tensioner, clutch cable, battery, starter motor cover, etc, etc.....

Re: GS450 "Sport" - airbox work....

Almost there:

Still need to mount 2 barbs for hoses, the air filter mount, and one panel at the very rear. And then it will probably still need some work for a final fitment. But it's getting there......

Re: GS450 "Sport" - airbox work....

You're gonna be a pro at this air box construction thing.
