Re: GS450 "Sport" - Yep.......progress. Resto-mod just went out the door.

I am, yes. The entire assembly is from an 89 GS500, but I put in a 35w/35w H4 bulb to save on power. There are a couple reasons for that, but it's not worth going into now.
And bought their 520 cases (less than $90 shipped for the pair). If I decide later that I need larger cases, their 540's have the same dimensions except they are deeper. Here's the side of the bike with no rack installed (notice the passenger heel protector plates):

A whole lot of cutting / welding / general fitting left me with this. The racks use the upper shock mount, a 1" bar clamp (that my soft saddle bags used as well), and the passenger heel plates for a 3 point mounting system.
You can see the 4 bolts in that pic that the actual cases mount with as well.

Case installed:
There are plenty of fender washers, stop nuts, etc to spread the pressure on the plastic. And I put some foam weatherstrip in between the rack and the plastic as well.
Re: GS450 "Sport" - Yep.......progress. Resto-mod just went out the door.
Thanks fellas. I'm pretty proud of them, but I'm really stoked about the storage capacity.....no more shoving stuff in a tank bag, using a bungy net across the seat, etc.. Now all I need is nice weather and time......
And Hoosier: I fixed that fork gaiter the next time I was in the garage.
Re: GS450 "Sport" - Yep.......progress. Resto-mod just went out the door.
Rich those look great, are they quick release? or internal bolts to take on and off? Never mind I see the bolts on the bracket and with your comment on washers I think that answers my question. Do you have soft bags to fit inside?
Re: GS450 "Sport" - Yep.......progress. Resto-mod just went out the door.
Definitely not quick release. The cases have 4 allen head bolts with stop nuts (each side), but the racks themselves come off fairly easily. It's just two 17mm nuts and two 10mm nuts each side.....so figure 5 minutes to remove the racks. Probably next winter I'll mess around with them and look into any upgrades. This is more of a functioning prototype.
No bags inside yet, but I have some small boat bags around somewhere that could be made to fit with no issues. Just a matter of finding them.....
I`ve plans to try to finish it of in easter when i got free from both school, work and (unfortenately) my kid!
So i hope all goes as planned for once
30 miller to go aint bad storeage
Re: GS450 "Sport" - Yep.......progress. Resto-mod just went out the door.
Did a little work on the fork brace last week..... the stock GS500 brace is 1/8" aluminum plate, and is known for being a weak point in the front end handling. After digging around a little bit, I found a 5/16" thick steel plate and removed a bunch of weight from it (sorry for the lack of pictures). But here is the steel brace painted black with the original brace on top to line up the fender:
To make sure there was no flex with two plates installed, I drilled out the fork mounting holes in the aluminum brace so the bolts are just centered - the steel plate is the only actual brace being used.
