Had my 1981 GSX 250 knocked before i went oversees,
it cracked a bracket which the battery had been grounded to and
subsequently cooked the battery ground lead when i turned the key.
I disconnected everything before i went away.

Now coming back to it 7 months later.
here she is sitting

I sorted out new grounds, leads and battery. I went to start it up and just got a hum from starter motor.
I pulled the stator cover off - removed the starter gear and ran power to the starter motor
it turned over when it wasnt under load- but weak. the battery i had gotten new before i went away but has been
sitting for a long time, i charged it but can that time sitting wreck it?

Any help would be great - the electrical side isnt my strong point.
Thanks

7 months could destroy a battery depending on conditions. Have you tried using a car battery to eliminate your current battery as faulty?

I gave that a go today and the car battery made it crank over the engine no problems BUT i had to skip over the solenoid because it wouldnt work otherwise.
solenoid gone?
any other common problems?

So you jumped the car battery directly to the starter motor and it spun freely? You could have a faulty starter relay - I've seen them go from perfectly fine to not working at all before.

Yep spun freely and easily cranked the engine. but when attached to the battery no response
- also however - no spark at the plugs which i suspect could be loose parts at the kill switch from when it got knocked.
so im gonna check that
