GSX 750 Cafe Racer Project

On the 23rd of December I managed to bag myself a suzuki gsx750 1981 for the price of £460. Quite cheap compared to others costing over £1000. This is my first big bike.

The only thing wrong with it is that it runs rough at low rpm, so today I had little cleaning session with the carbs and the previous owner had larger jets put in for the pod filters. I will swap the filters for the original air box and the main jets are a massive 140. I think I've found the correct manual online and think the original Main Jet size is 112.5. Also the previous owner tried to remove the pilot jets and one is stuck, the head of the jet is gone. I had a look on youtube and some guy used a reverse screw thing (pardon the tech talk lol) and got it out. Will have a look on ebay for a screw removal kit or something.

I would like to swap the swinging arm and with one from an inazuma 1996 GSX 750 so i could get that newskool look and and improve the handling. I think it might be an easy swap, but I'm not sure what I would have to do with the engine sprocket, because the new thicker rim will move the chain out of alignment (I think). If any one knows it would be much appreciated.

I also want to swap the forks for USD forks and I know the Ducati 750ss forks fit a GS750 frame. Hope there is not much difference and I would be able to fit 'em.

Any info will be much appreciated.

Nice pickup! Im a total beginner with carbs so can't help there but check out All Balls Racing for bearing conversion kits. They will tell you which bearings have similar ID, OD and thickness and will make the process of finding a replacement front end much easier. Also, remember to check the fork length from the donor as USD forks are typically a bit shorter than regular forks and this will reduce the rake and make for twitchier steering. There's heaps of info on here, start by searching for other GSX750 projects and get reading those build threads! Good luck! :)

Probably best to worry about forks and all that a bit later, get her running nice and all the electrics tidied up first.
 
Great bikes the GS750, the best vintage Jap. 750 IMO. Get it humming before anything else.

Going to tag along on this one. Here in the states the early GS didn't have the X designation until much later. May help in your search for info to just use GS750.

Suzuki is starting up a vintage parts programme. I hope the other Japanese manufacturers will follow suit.
 
Just joined the board and did a search for GSX750 as I have just picked up a -81 just like yours. Love the look!

great bike !! but leave the suspension up front it is plenty good as are the hagon shocks..... turning those handlebars upside down :eek: like that is pure sillyness ::) you are all stretched out and will not have very good control of the bike with the zombie arm look
it is your first big bike leave it as it is,ride it and enjoy it, they were very good bikes
