Gsxr usd k2 triple tree steer tube length issue, advice needed

Right I want to run Suzuki gsxr1000 k2 upside down forks on my kawasaki z650.

I have the Suzi forks and triple clamps.

I've removed the kawasaki ones from the bike and tried to install the Suzy ones and I've hit a problem.

I can use the z650 bearings on the suzi clamps and that works however the threaded section for the top bearing nuts isn't high enough to get the top bearing nuts on. I can fit the washers, top dust seal top clamp and top nut and clamp it all down so it's tight and turns freely but I don't know if this will do?

I have a few questions:
1. Can I leave the bearing nuts off and use the washers, top clamp and top nut to lock things down?
2. Can I get a longer steering tube (don't know where from) and have that pressed into the bottom clamp?
3. Any other suggestions are welcome.

The tube on my z650 doesn't look like it could be pressed in to the Suzi clamp but I'm willing to try if anyone's any info on what will work.
Thanks in advance

Buy a longer stem, or lengthen yours. Cheaper to lengthen if you have the tools.

If you can get one of the bearing nuts on you could get away with this, but I wouldn't feel too confident running the bearings with only the top triple nut to hold the whole thing together.

Cut and lengthened is far cheaper than a new stem.

We did one to fit a R5 front end on a CB350 a while back.

Cut it, drill out both sides a bit, run a piece of metal into both, and weld solid.

Hi guys, yes the bearings are the same diameter but gsxr are deeper than the zx ones.

I'll have my machine guy look at lengthening the gsxr stem.

At present we have pressed the gsxr stem out and I left the kz stem and bottom yoke with him for him to grind and press out that stem as they aren't as easy to press out as welded in at the bottom.

The gsxr stem seems to be alloy. I know an ally welder so hopefully he can weld it up for me but just to check, the gsxr k2 stem isn't made from any special material that my ŵelder won't be able to work on is it?

You can use 7075 alloy to make a new one.
The original is anodised to harden the surface but they seem OK left 'raw'

Excellent my machining guy said to make a whole new one from 7075 so it has no weak spots.

I'll tell him it's ok to use the 7075 now.

Thanks for your advice guys

I, and probably others, would be interested in following your progress. How much will this cost? Also, a few pictures of the work woudl be interesting, this seems to be one area where there are a number of ways to get the job done, but none of them obviously the best way.

Look to the left of your screen... click the Cognito Moto link and order up a new stem, if you like, send Devin the lower tree and he will press the stem in for you.
