GT500 noob Qs

please help out a poor greenhorn.

are the plugs supposed to fire simultaneously??
if so, how do i adjust the pistons to be in the same position?

this sounds a little crazy to me.

If I remember correctly, the T/GT500 is a 180° twin.... So my understanding is the plugs fire seperately.... If they didn't, one plug would be firing while its piston was down and forcing in fresh mixture... If both plugs are firing together, I'd say something is wrong with your ignition.

T500 used points and fired each cylinder in its own time. On the Gt there was a change to electronic ignition with Wasted spark.

The crank is still 180 degrees but now it fires every 180 degrees and both plugs fire together with a single, double ended coil. When you set the timing on one side, it's set for the other side too.

H. A very late, but heartfelt thankyou for the informative and useful answers.
and here comes another easy question:

how does one adjust the ignition timing on said gt500?
i think it is a little too advanced. - it is a PITA to start for a small timer like me, but once it runs it runs great and past 6k rpm it runs extremely good.

Hi Dron......I doubt you will need to adjust the timing on your Gt500, it has electronic ignition, unlike the T500, so it left the factory set correctly, and should never need touching again.
What symptoms make you think there is a timing issue?

it runs OK, but way better in the high rpms and it is extremey hard to start.
i don't know a lot, but someone told me that this could be the problem.
what else could it be? bad stator coil? clogged air filter?
i think there's plenty of spark - all wires are resoldered and it has a new ignition coil and cdi unit.

Check your plugs, wires and caps. Then go on to your carbs. But of course, these are old bikes, so a lot could be wrong, so do check the airfilters too, don't know what you might find.

thank you everybody.
@wingspan: nice link. i did find the site but not that particular page. thank you.

so: there's no spark when i try to start it. if someone heavier than me gives it a good kicking it will start and run fine. am i just too small?

Nope. Youre just not kicking hard enough. Hahaha

Honestly, theres a bit of a "feel" ya have to have for starting a bike w the kicker. My last 350 was that way. I was about the only person who could kick it over. If youre not used to starting it that way, it can be tricky.

Now that Ive said that... It shouldnt be. If everything is as it should be, you should have no trouble kicking it over.

Do you have a manual? If not, get one. Set EVERYTHING to stock. Make sure your carbs are spotless. Check valve clearance. And so on...

get a shop manual and all your questions will be answered. think of it as an encyclopedia with pictures to your bike.

it turns out it is a matter of tecnique - and leg muscles... i have been thinking about mounting a bicycle pedal on the kickstarter arm. do you think that would make it a little easier for me to start it?
it is still harder to start when hot and it has problems idling when hot too.

I got it started yesterday.
with big thanks to the guys at sundial moto sports. http://www.suzuki2strokes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4970&sid=e4ceda7f0894410ee64094c0c9652969&start=0

I still have a question that I thought I'd ask here.
I have wrapped the headers because they were prety ugly. It dried for about a week before i ran it. Now the left header's wrap is getting some discoloration and emitted a bit more smoke than the right.
Should this tell me something? Is the left cylinder getting a little more gas than the right? Or was one of them just more moist than the other?

You need to find someone who knows how to kickstart a vintage bike and ask nicely if they will teach you.
If the 'bigger' people are 'slap kicking it, it will damage the starter mechanism.
It should be possible to 'feel' for compression, , let it slowly go passed top dead center and 'launch' onto kickstart at around 9~10 o'clock position.
If you cycle (as implied by avatar) you shouldn't have any problems
I rode one for a few months, never had any problems starting and I was only about 9~10 stone at the time (135~140 lbs, ~68Kg)
My girlfriend had problems, but she was only about 5ft 5", 110lbs
It's all in the technique
Oh, and BTW,you can't fit electric start to one without a LOT of work

Could be that one is holding more condensation. When you get it started and running, put your hand at the end of each muffler. Is the exhaust hot from both sides?
