Hammering-in knee indents into a stock tank?

You could use a piece of stove pipe, massage the shape so it made contact all the way around... That could be one method to confirm before you cut... If not a symmetrical shape on the stove pipe, both ends could be used.
It's a clever idea! Not as straight forward as one might think but a great idea!

Cut them out using the finest/thinnest cutting tool you can get your hands, on and then swap sides with the peices you have removed.

Now the peice from the right side of the tank is welded in its inverted position into the left side of the tank and visa versa. Hey presto, knee indents. File back welds, bondo and shape to suit. A lot quicker and neater than bashing it with a hammer. ;)

That's an old trick for "dishing" chopper tanks. Works well IF you are a competent welder and have the right tools. Wouldn't bother trying to weld it with a flux core set up. You'll burn it up unless you're really good. Instead of pipe or what have you, you can just make a template from something flexible like masking tape.

This.
Make your template on illustrator and then print it on card stock. Use that to trace perfect lines measuring to make sure they are in the same place.
Then grab a dremel with a 1/32" blade and cut it out carefully.
You'll never get it welded with flux core, at least not effectively, you'll need at least mig, preferable tig. You need to really be able to control the heat otherwise you'll blow through the thin metal and do that a couple of times and you've got a junk tank.
 
Ive done a few with bare metal with no filler you need a dead blow flat faced hammer and a 12 pack

That tool is a teardrop mallet. If you do a google for it they are on Amazon. The Eastwood company sells one too.

i used the same technique as edelweiss to pound the indents.what i forgot that it is critical to really once heat up the metal of the tank (no gasoline inside whatsoever :)!!)then you have easy work.

we had a really really hard time sanding and bondoing...
but imo it came out great.

Im also considering knocking some indents into a standard cx500 tank, however have been warned against the idea by a member of the cx forum due to the creases in the existing scallops.

Is there any truth in this?

Get a vacuum cleaner hose, duct tape it to your car exhaust, put the end in your tank filler cap and leave the car running for 20 mins. All the fuel vapours will be purged and it's then safe to weld / torch / hit with hammers / fuck up.

bringing this back from the dead. but... easy way to make your tank safe to work on is to just burn off the vapors after you've emptied all the remaining liquid fuel. just hold a lit match over the gas tank filler hole. took about 30 minutes to let it burn off. wasn't as "exciting" as i had thought. be sure to check if your tank has been lined with sealing stuff if you don't plan on cutting into it to grind it out. about to use the cutting/inverse/tig dishing technique. ill post pictures when im done.

You got lucky if you did that. That is some seriously dangerous advise. :mad: Do not listen to this guy.

Yeah this is the dumbest thing I have ever read.
In order to avoid blowing up a tank you should hold a match over the filler hole.

No one told this guy gasoline vapors are explosive huh?

Fill the tank with water/vinegar/pine sol/monkey cum and call it a day.
 
done it a few times. never had a problem with it. when you first light it, it'll puff up a little because of the oxygen in the tank but once that burns off the flame is only created at the mouth of the filler hole, where the the oxygen mixes with the fuel vapors being drawn out... obviously don't do it in your kitchen. don't knock it till you've seen it or tried it. or just call me and dumb-ass and pour vinegar into a gas tank. to eat there own.
 
Ever see a video of a gas tanker on fire and when the fuel all burns off and there's only the vapours left the thing explodes?

Yep. Not pretty.
