Harbinger of the Apocalypse...

A while back I put together a CB77 and had a lot of fun with the bike. Unfortunately, I had to sell it to make room for the two other projects, a '68 CB350 and another CB77. I really like the 77's...

The build already has a name, the harbinger of the apocalypse, dubbed so by 66rep. We'll see if the name fits.

For this thread, I'm gonna build a CB77 again. This time I plan on making a few changes from the previous build. I really want that race look this time. I'll use the stock motor, forks, swingarm and wheels, but the frame will be de-tabbed, I'll hide the electrics and I'm gonna try to modify the top triple so it looks smooth and possibly run clip ons. Those are a few things I'd like to try.

I've already ordered a bunch of parts. Most should be here in the next week or so. Pics to come as the build actually starts or as parts arrive.

The frame will not arrive for a few more days, but I'll try and get some engine pics up tomorrow...

So the battery came in yesterday and I am trying to find a spot on the bike where it won't be seen. On the seat, there's a large hollow spot between the tank and the main part of the seat so I thought I'd try there. It's made by Ballistic and is their smallest battery. It says 50cc maximum, but I think that's just for starters. And as I'm not using a starter, I think it'll work just fine.

So here is the actual seat I'll be using. You can see the spot I'd like to use and the size of the battery. I had some packing foam lying around so I cut it up to make a bit of a pocket for the battery. I'm still not sure on this one as I don't want the battery getting too hot. If any of you guys have mounted a battery in this way or similar, let me know how it worked out for ya...

Holy crap. I've got flashlights that take bigger batteries than that! I'd say that's as bare minimum as you can get! Yeah, I'm keepin an eye on this one.

Yeah, this battery is super small. I wasn't even aware they made em this small til Skyler said something...

Oooh! When the battery burns up from overcharging, then catches all that foam on fire, watch out for your nuts...

Hopefully I'm wrong, but what's the Ah rating on that thing?

That's one reason why I'm bringing this up. I am looking for opinions on whether it's ok or not. The Ah is rated at 4, while a normal battery is rated at 11Ah. Let me know how you think it'll charge on a '65 Honda stator.

Ya know 11 is like 7 more than 4 right i would also like to point out that your bike is so near it makes no difference to fifty years old. Now my experence with bikes that are 5 and 10 years newer is that most of the time the wire connecters at the stator and at the reg are melted due to over charging so pull ten year of technology out of my example and ahh well go get some leather pants

Wrap it in fiberglass insulating cloth to save your balls and put something inline to prevent overcharging.

That's kinda what I was thinking about an inline resistor or something. I'm also looking at universal regulator/rectifiers.

I'm still unsure about the battery issue, but I'm gonna put that aside until I get to it. At the moment I'm building the engine. Just torqued the head down a few minutes ago and decided to call it a night.

Picked up the frame last week, so I'll start on that in a few day. Will most likely get it powder coated, but I was thinking about that appliance epoxy. I have a friend who has had good results with it so far. Just not sure I wanna do the prep work first...

Take it to someone and have them media blast it and then clean it. All the surface imperfections, save for dents, will be gone and you'll have nice shiny bare metal for your primer to stick to.

So I bit the bullet and took most of the bike to powder coat. I should get it back in a week or so.

I'm pretty much done with the engine, except for a few minor things. Here are a few engine pics.

Not sure if anyone if following this, but got the engine installed recently. I will be welding up the exhaust this week and getting the wheels trued. Will be a roller soon...

Looks sweet! We don´t really have those bikes over here so i have no idea what to expect. I know, I could just Google it and find out but that would spoil the surprice :)

Like the look of the engine, have you modified the cooling fins or are they stock?
