Headlight not drawing power

snmavridis

Gettin my life together. One bolt. At a time.
The title describes the problem. i put the probe to the blue and the white wires and theres no current going to the headlight. fuses have been changed and are alright. the turn signals are not connected but they draw power, the horn is disconnected as well. the headlight highbeam light doesnt work when i switch the light to highbeam. I recall the mechanic who worked on my bike when it had a fairing on it touching a ground somewhere and the light turned on. I tried connecting the green wire (ground) to different grounds that are sure fire to work, but it didnt change anything. I dont know whats up. Help?

Have you verified power at the fuse? Probe BOTH sides of it. If so, then move to the left hand control and make sure you have power going in and out of it. Sorry I can't give you wire colors, but I can't read that kind of detail on the diagram you attached when I blow it up. Looks like the power to the control comes from a Br/R wire (first connector below the loop in your green line at the harness connection)... then I follow it off the page to the right.
If that is the wire, verify it has power to the control, probably inside the headlight bucket.

Is the low beam working?

If so, the high beam wiring should have power when the switch is on high beam.

Is it possible you have the blue wire hooked up wrong somewhere?

If not, check for voltage at the headlight switch. Should be power in when the key is on, and power out for the low beam, and then high beam...

It is either a wiring connection issue or a switch problem...I would bet on a wiring problem.

On the 76, the starter button disconnects the headlight when you depress the starter switch, there may be issues there too....Starter switches are notorious for breaking when they get old. the plastic becomes brittle and shatters in the switch....

the problem might lie in that. my switch was broken and anytime the main switch went on the starter would engage. i disconnected it at the magnetic switch to prevent it from engaging. then i got the time to take off the throttle assembly and disconnected the button from there. now theres no action at the electric start, and the headlight still wont work, neither the low beam nor the high beam. now heres the weird thing; my bike doesnt have an on/off headlight switch. only a low/hi switch on the clutch control. unfortunately the screws on the clutch control are stripped so i need to address that issue before i can get into the clutch controls and check it out there. any other suggestions until then?

i checked resistance at the fuses and found some irregularity. the head light fuse has a resistance of ~7ohms and the other two 7amp fuses have a resistance of ~1.2ohms. sorry about the wiring diagram, i was struggling with it too at first. and the left hand controls do draw power. the turn signals work (albeit they dont blink).

does the brown and red wire going to the left hand controller have current? does the black and red from the right controller draw current?

The right hand main head light switch effectively connects the black live feed to the black/red leaving the controller. This then goes through the fuse, back up the harness on the black/red wire and out one of the plugs to the left hand controller. This provides the power to that is then either switched to the blue for hi beam or white for low beam.

I think you provided your own answer. the depressed start disconnects the headlight connection. the fact that this is always on suggests that the headlight disconnect is always on, even if you have removed the starter from the circuit
