Hello from Houston

Hello all, if there is anyone in Houston who knows things about SOHC4's and would like to help tear a bike apart, cut things off, put things on and drink beer, I have the garage for it.

I picked up my project, and have not even had time to pour gas into her and try to start her. She seems to be a bit of a mutt, but that is ok, so is my dog. Frame number is 69/70, I will know hen I get the title, engine is 74ish. But she is in pretty good shape. I plan on tearing her apart and creating the most bad ass cafe racer my garage has ever seen, bar none.

You should also spend some time over at www.sohc4.us/forums - the DEFINITIVE online community for Honda CB750's etc. I'm quite sure there are a number of members there in your area who would be interested in your project as well.

The frame sounds interesting - you should confirm the serial number and manufacture date. It could be a sandcast model frame, meaning the first few months of the first year of the model.

Specifics help hey? lol

Bike looks great. I can't go to Houston to help you, but I'm sure we'll all chime in on whatever we can help with (I will) just ask!

I left town for work 2 days after picking it up, and don't have the title in hand yet. I will also be out of town until mid February, so no playing with my toys. But I do have the frame number, which is CB750-1036388, the local Honda dealer told me it was later first production 69/70. There is no VIN plate on the bike, but I have been to a few web sites that indicated that this was not uncommon for early bikes, but I dunno. The number off the engine is CB750E-2442247, which is a later model. According to the frame number it should have the idiot lights in the gauges, which I want, but it does not.
I am a member of the SOHC4 forums, but am still soaking up info from both there and here. You know, learning (read: stealing ideas).

As for what I am going to do.... I have a few ideas, but will nail them down when I get home and spend a few quality hours in a chair, with a cooler of beer, looking at the bike and getting onto it and then off, looking at it again. As one does with new toys. If anyone is in Houston and wants to come by for beers and brainstorming.......

Short list:
clubman bars or clip-ons, I am not sure yet. If I get gauges with lights I will probably go clips.
relocate electrics, if it is a reliable starter then I may ditch the electric start
relocate oil tank (either make my own or buy one from Benji's)
rearsets
Either twisted spokes or wheels from a later SS or painted/powdercoated wheels
dual front disk
Polish the crap out of everything poloshable
powdercoat frame, satin black (and assorted pieces)
I may bash the tank (you guys are a bad influence!)
YELLOW YELLOW YELLOW
As for exhaust, I will leave what is there, there, I may do the big bore thing, if I do then I will go 4 - 1 (rejetting, of course)

This short list is a big list, priority #1 is put some gas in her and get her started, drive her around for a little while and then make my priority list and talk to my mechanic about the big bore kit.

Then I will need to consult the wife and get the nod of approval.

EDIT
I just found out how much twisted spokes are........

Welcome to the forum. Good to see another Texan here. I'm from Fort Worth. If you REALLY wanna go big bore, then check out Cycle Exchange. They are the gods of big bore and carburation for the 750.

I honestly don't know how big I will go, if I go bigger at all. The factors that wil hold me back are $$$$$ The cost of the kit is $250, but then there is the cost of the actual boring and porting of the heads, then possible machining, which may lead to a need for larger carbs. Exhaust will ne be a problem with that scenario as I would dump 4 straight pipes out the bottom of the bike tucked out of the way. Loud much?

Main plan is as follows:
!. get bike running
2. ride bike whilst pondering changes
3. do the math
3. ride bike around
4. begin the ordering process

I still have my Nighthawk to ride while I am stripping, hammering, cutting, hammering, grinding, cursing and changing my mind.

I think I need a beer now :p
