Hello from Idaho! New CB750C.

I have spent hours perusing this forum today and am very excited to join this community. I have been longing for a bike for some time and on Monday I purchased a 1982 CB750C for 1300. The bike has a few electrical quirks but according to the previous owner it has been maintained well. I plan a cafe build, and based on what i have learned today, an F/K model would have been an optimal starting point. I am happy with my purchase so far, and am really looking forward to the build. I have owned bikes before, but this will be my first project.
There are a few things that I want to change and if anyone has any input/recommendations please let me know.
I don't like the comstar wheels very much. I would prefer a spoked 18" front & rear combo. I like the idea of twin disks up front but switching wheels and shorter forks will require me to use a single disk. I dont like the stock 750c tank and have found a few different tanks/seats from Benjie's and DCC.
Other than removing all of the hideous add-ons, I dont really have a clue where to start. I will probably end up removing the fairing and riding it for a little bit while I research what i want to do. I just need to buy a headlamp. Does anyone know the size of the K headlamp? 6.25" ?

Here it is on its way home. Made a 400 mile round trip to pick it up. I couldnt find many bikes in my area.




Removed the fairing. Need to get a headlight and eliminate that junction box.

Anyway I'm doing a cb750 as well and I can start you off with a few insights.

1: if you wnna go with spoked wheels and a dual disc setup I would advise a whole modern front end swap. I am doing one with an 04 r6 front end and spoked wheels with dual discs so I can help you out and point you in some good directions. Also look at builds by Speedbump he has a GSXr front end swap thats flawless.

2: As far as tanks Im not surs about dcc's tanks but I know benji's stuff has been criticized for being really expensive junk.

3: Best place to start is to get it running good and to get a really good plan of action together. Then start disassembly. That way it doesn't get so overwhelming.

Oh and you shouldn't have much trouble selling some nice comstars around here lol

Nice to see more of the DOHC 750's especially the C models coming around.
Looks like a nice starting point. About the best advice I can give to begin with is to check your valve clearance. Shim and bucket type so adjustment is a bit more complicated than adjustable rocker arm style. But because of this many suffered from neglect. Ignore what the manual says and go for .004 to .006 Inches or .10 to .15 Millimeter clearance.
As mentioned do some searching on Benjis shit before pulling the trigger. Not too many good reviews. I hear the CX tanks and some Suzuki GT's can work but honestly didn't want to be a guinny pig... I got tired of the searching and wound up going for a K model tank. F's are a little long and require more mods but they sure are pretty!
No love for the Commies huh? If you want spoked wheels the easiest would be off a 79-82 K model swap as it was front disc / rear drum set up like your C, BUT that leaves you with a single disc front brake. I have seen the K front wheel converted to twin disc using parts from your Commies. For example http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=14054.0 but it's not a direct swap. Maybe since you are starting out with a C, you could mount you rotors on a K hub, juggle some wheel spacers, and the caliper spacing would be close. Then you still have the issue of matching 18" front and rear you are after... might try just the hubs out of the K model and contact http://www.buchananspokes.net/ to get the 18" hoops you want and a set of spokes for the conversion.

Just some thoughts to get you going in the right direction I hope.

SaltCityCafe I actually ended up buying the bike in Logan. KSL has been awesome but it seems like anytime a bike pops up you have to act quickly. Its cool to know there is a decent enthusiast community just a couple of hours away.

After thinking about the dual disks, it is not as big of a deal to me. I may just end up getting some K wheels and fork. Is there any advantage to the C air assist fork? I know they are a couple inches longer and I suppose I could just raise them in the triple trees to lower the bike. Maybe that is just a bad idea. I really like the look of the older bikes with modern front ends, so i may potentially end up going down that route.

Thanks for the advice on BCC products. After a google search I have changed my mind about buying anything from him. Im dissapointed about that because some of his tanks look fantastic. Ill have to research a little more about the DCC tanks. The more I look at the K/F tanks, the more I like them, especially the supersport tanks. How much modification needs to be done? I have a Mig welder so Im not afraid of a little modification.

Is a valve adjustment a DIY job? or do you recommend finding a shop to do it. I consider myself to be mechanically inclined but have never done a valve adjustment. I really would like to have the bike in proper mechanical order before I don anything else. After that I would like to take it apart and clean up the frame, powdercoat it, and paint the engine.

I need to order a headlight. Does a 7" bucket look good? or should i go a little smaller?

Another thing I want to do know is fix all of the electrical issues. The kill switch does not kill the bike, I have to turn off the ignition. Im not sure if its a faulty switch or a wiring/fuse block issue. I will probably end up going with Sparck to get a new harness. It just seems like an appropriate avenue with a 31 year old motorcycle.
 
I consider the valve adjustment a DIY job, but I have been wrenching for a few decades. If you can follow written directions, use a feeler gauge and a micrometer / calipers, and do some light math it really isn't bad. Shims are still available but you need to measure the clearance first to get what you need. You may get away with moving some of the shims you already have to reduce what you have to buy.
In the manuals I mentioned is the factory wiring diagram to help with your electrical gremlins. I doubt the kill switch issue is a fuse.
Headlight size is subject to the look you are after. Stock was a 7" like this one on mine.

As you have what looks like nice tires already might I suggest painting the Comstars and leaving well enough alone until you decide what direction you want to go. Solid black paint draws attention away from them and with spring around the corner get the beast on the road..

After reading a few posts and watching a couple of videos I feel fully confident in my ability to do the valve adjustment. Sounded more complicated than it actually appears. I like the look of the 7" so that is what I am going to order. Thanks for the pic.

Thats impressive, at first I thought those were a different set of weels. Its amazing how much different they look all black. The tires on mine are new, so I will most likely keep the commies on there for this year, it'll be nice to ride the bike sooner. Thanks for the pic.

Technically they are, the early Commies the edges rolled inward, the next generation like yours and mine a called Reverse Comstars because the edges roll outwards. Small difference, looks are similar.
 
Here is the 81 with wheels just like your current build, sorry I only have the picture with me on it and not my 23 year old daughter..

Downtown809 you kind of look like Bryan Cranston in this picture. Your bike looks great and I really like the look of the wheels painted all black. I am definitely going to paint them for this summer. I'll look into changing them over the next off - season.

Jenn it is good to hear all the positive feedback about Sparck.

I've been removing more parts just trying to get to the guts of the bike. The wiring feels very brittle,corroded, and even melted at some of the connectors. I think I will be doing a harness sooner than later.

Is the regulator typically located next to the battery? From pictures I have seen it appears that meant people relocate them to the front of the engine.

Definitely need to overhaul some of these connectors and wiring.
