Hello from Melbourne Aust.

Been Around the Block
I have just purchased a 78 CB750K (see pics) and will be modding it in the cafe style.....what else! Plans include the usual items like losing the ugly seat, bars and rear fender. The 78K's were particularly ugly, unlike the K0's to K6's which looked great stock. Anyway black is the new black so I'll be powdercoating the rims and hubs and giving the donk a black overcoat as well. This site is great, just i what need to help me finish the project.

I have one question some out there may be able to answer and it relates to the length of the bike. The K8's are 40mm longer than the K0 - K6's. Eactly where are they longer? Is it all in the rear swing arm? Or is it in rake of the forks or a combination of the two?

Thanks

Welcome to the site!

I was out clubbing with a couple of people from Melbourne the other night in Edinburgh...

Anyway, sorry I don't know why the CB's were different length.

That's OK,

Melbourne is full of party animals.........

i've been building a cb350 for about 10 months, hope to get it on the road before it's 1 year anniversary.

and i reckon there's more then two of us
i heard on netrider that the guys in the garage of mcintyre have some sort of cafe racer club or something going, build their own stuff etc.
there's this dude - http://www.netrider.net.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52983
and speer performance in richmond has some cool stuff, 2 stroke cafe bikes which are as good as anything i've seen

Hope you get it on the road soon.

Got to be honest and say I haven't seen that many CB 350's on the road, but they look like a sharp little unit, judging by that link you posted.

You know it's amazing when you get on a UK site like this just to find out there are guys doing this stuff in your own back yard.

BTW, my other bike is a 97 Yamaha SRV 250 (see pic). You familiar with these?

Regards Nik

Gday Nik, I'm from Sydney. I'm pretty sure this is a Canadian site not UK unless I'm reading your post wrong. Anyway welcome and looking forward to seeing what you do with your bike. Heres a link to my build its a cb 175 that i've owned for years

See, thats how much I'm paying attention. Sorry if offended anyone.

Anyway checked out your project and I have to say it pretty good. That seat is really slick. Might try something like that for mine. Regarding tanks, I definetly reckon you should be going with your first one. Those knee scallops you formed are great. Definitly more cafe than the stock tank. I like the tanks that Benji makes, nothing but curves and cut outs.

Anyway, I got my old 78K to fire for the first time since I picked her up a month ago from Townsville QLD. Just had to replace the plugs, which were all fairly black and greasy (not good). I got a rebuild coming soon. It's pretty warn out out generally. The scary thing is the difference in weight between my SRV and the CB 750 (150kg vs 230 odd). I know why you cant help but break side covers on them, because your knees continually bash them trying to keep it propped up.

Cheers Mate

Proudly Canadian And Welcome

Thanks for the comments on my build, it's a long time in the making. The yellow tank is the original stock tank. Your yamaha looks like a fun ride. Whats the difference between the SRV and the SRX?
Benjis bikes are cool love the 350 he did, awesome.

Hi again,

Only difference is the tank and seat. Frame is exactly the same. Yamaha went more retro with this bike. It only sold in Australia about two years before they pulled it due to weak sales. But it's funny everywhere I park it, people come up and ask me about it. It has the same engine as the Virago 250.

Just a couple of things about your seat. I am now thinking of having a go at making my own seat, mainly because I don't much care for what i've seen available for my bike. I drew up a sketch (see below). But I got bit lost reading your post. By the pics you show it looks like you make the buck and then glass it. but then it seems like you go back to using the buck as the actual seat.

Is this right? And which posts, do you know of, show good details of making their own seats?

Cheers

hey, you should start a build thread,

the way hotfunk built his seat is a good strong way to do it, and i'm sure the weight of the plywood would not be a big concern on your bike,

Think you are right Liam,

But I'm not going to be too adventurous. It this stage I am only planning to do the seat and powdercoat the wheels and repaint in Matt metallic Orange with a black stripe down the middle of it. I'm going to leave it fairly grimey as I'm also into ratrods and that look. This bike is kind of like an affordable ratrod for me. Hopefully it will be finished by this Jan.

Cheers

Hey Hotfunk67,

I found this pic and I thought you might appreciate it, as you are into low-fat caferacers. (see photo)

I think it is some kind of ducati but not totally sure. Anyhow, if you or anyone else knows anything about it, I would appreciate the info. The rear curve on that seat is sharp in all senses of the word.

What ever it is, it IS one sweet little ride.

Cheers

Nice bike, no idea what it is though. Looks like it has a Beneli tank like chris f put on his 360.

If you go into the tank and seat section there are some great threads in there for making fibreglass moulds.
With my seat I actually removed the buck and then cut some ply to fit the shape as a base and screwed it together. It is still a lot lighter than the stock seat and allows me to mount wiring if needed (still might make a tray for the wiring and battery).

What bars are you going to use? the reason for this question is if you are using flat bars maybe a "brat" style seat would look better on you bike and would probably suit the rat look as well. would give you 2 up riding as well, just a thought.

it's liek a wasp

Thanks Liam,

The kneeslider another great site.

So it IS a Duc. Most people associate that brand with Monster's not Monza's.

I've got dragbars and clubbies both in black. I've got the clubman's on a the moment because the dragbars hit the stock tank.

I think I know what you mean by brat bikes. I'm thinking of those stripped down fifties looking machines (see pics).

Can you show me some brat bike pics/ sites.

http://www.bratstyle.com/ i understand it's a specific regional variation of the bobber style

i think there's some pictures on the forum somewhere of a cb750 with a lowered back and front end, and drag bars, looks great for such a simple mod. definetly recommend you hunt it down.

http://www.vanem.com.au/ sell the seats i think, Deus may as well. basically the formula seems to be, lower front and rear, low double seat, retro firestone tyres in giant sizes, remove the gauges, high bars.
