Hi Folks....kinda new to the bike world. Nice little forum you have here though. I have had my fair share of fun working on cars but bikes are kinda new to me. Especially the whole points ignition thing....lol. I bought a bike off of one of the board members here TinTin (I think that's his board name?) a few weeks ago (1971 XS650) and he also told me about this site. I am actually in the process of getting her running. Cleaned the carbs, cleaned the points, new plugs, and fresh fuel but still cant get her going. All she does is backfire and smokes out the carbs...lol. It also tends to kick back on the kick start lever sometimes when I try to kick her over. Some of the folks on other forums have told me that it sounds like the timing is off. haven't checked it yet though. Which leads me to my first question on the board. Does any body have a PDF repair manual for the 1971 XS's they can email me? I have found some repair manuals online but only for the later models. If not ,does anybody know where I can pick one up off the self? Most places don't seem to have one in stock and they have to order one in.....I don't want to wait that long...lol. Thanks guys for your help!

Check this site out. They may be able to help with a manual. Or give you some pointers.

Welcome to the board!!...
Forget the points, get an electronic ignition!!

Thanks for the welcomes folks! That is the eventual plan....but the Boyer Ignition systems are around $300-$400 aren't they? I just want to get her running and plated before I start the mods.

Saves a lot of future headaches especially when starting cold!!

Welcome fabricator. Keep us posted on the XS project.

Points can work well if their OEM and set up right.

I've gone from points, to DynaS (fried after 5 years), back to points, electronic Ign. from a KZ1000 (IC Igniter problems), and am now back to points. I have found no problems the last 3 years with OEM points, mind you I'm lucky if I get out more than twice a week on the bike.
