Helmet painting

My bike is not transportation, it is a respite
This isn't actually moto related but I thought someone here might know and it could apply to moto helmets.

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive way to paint a helmet metal flake glossy black. I'm looking for about $5-10 per helmet not counting labor.

It is actually for athletic helmets so the finish would need to be fairly durable. I would be doing this to purchased helmets so I can not bake them.

What kind of prep would I need to do? I guess they are just plastic shells (not fiberglass/epoxy).

Paint recommendations?

Thanks.

Haha! Yes. They were jealous of some team's helmets at the national championships this weekend, which were in Atlanta by the way.

I'd imagine using any enamel that has a bit of flex agent and baked at like 250 for about 7-11 minutes should get you what you are looking for. Should be long enough to help the curing process while not melting the plastic. We screen and cure plastic components at 350 for 10 minutes and the enamel passes the tape and thumb tests. Not really the best suggestion but may give you a lead to look into.

Be very cautious. Many polycarbonate helmet shells can be damaged and rendered unsafe from exposure to the solvents of some paints.

Scuff the plastic really well. Black "Roth Big Daddy" metalflake rattle-can. Apply in several light coats and make sure its warm and very well mixed. Nice heavy coat of clear after the base has dried and cured completely.

Won't last forever, but should be cheap enough and look good enough for a season.

Thanks Mike! Sorry, I have almost no knowledge about paint. Is the black flake spray just black flake? So if the helmet were green, it would be green with black flakes? If it is not black, I would need a black base?

The teams colors are green and black. I might try green flakes on a black helmet.

Additionally, some helmets are glossy and some are matte to begin with. I imagine they would look different if I just put flake on them, and then cleared. Correct?

ADC, yes I am aware of that, which is why I said they were made of some kind of plastic. I have had that happen before. I guess I just need to test one out.

Keith, I would not want to bake them because of the foam liners and other stuff inside them, not because of the plastic shell.

I've used the Roth green flake. It wasn't a "paint" as much as a green tinted clear with green flake in it. Turned out really nice on a black base. Very 70s. Couldnt speak for the black they sell personally. Shoot them a call. They're really cool guys and will definitely help ya out

Look, don't let the Rome girls find out about this. Next thing ya know they'll be trying to get me to paint purple flake on theirs.

Duplicolor makes some decent looking metallic paint.
I did my tank in it and it came out really nice.

I was going to wait until I was done but I will post an update.

This has definitely taken a turn towards the girly. So metal flake was too "subtle" for them. They wanted more Liberace!

So metal flake turned to glitter.

Right now I am in the middle of an experiment.

I painted one side of a helmet with black Krylon Glitter Blast spray paint.

I sprayed the other side with adhesive and poured black glitter all over it.

My next step is to put a bunch of coats of clear enamel over them to seal it all together.

Hopefully it is sparkly enough the girls.
