Help! Engine cleaning, coating and fins.

I have been having a tough time trying to clean the cooler fins. It is very hard to get between the fins and these stains are tough. I have been thinking about some kind of blasting. Water would be great but I can't find anyone in LA that does it. Maybe Soda or sand blasting although I would like to be away from this giving all the hassle and potential issues with particles inside of the engine. Any ideas?

There is also this layer of a coat in the block that I don't know if I should strip it or not. I want to have that shiny metal look but It is so hard to go around all the small places with the brush. Can you see the difference between the bare metal and the coating on the block? Any ideas on how to take it off or if I should do it?

you are opening a can of worms if you blast it and then don't properly coat it
and it is an air cooled engine gets very hot and will be impossible to keep looking good unless you NEVER ride it
are you building a show contest machine or a rider ?

The engine is likely painted and clearcoated.

Blasting down to bare metal without taking it apart is tough and risky. Only people I've seen do it use soda.

If you do disassemble, there are vapor-blasting shops that take work in through the mail and are reasonably priced. Plus with vapor-blasting you can get away without painting the engine after and the finish is pretty spectacular.

Otherwise do what most do - clean it as well as you can and then paint it as a single lump.

If you have it soda blasted what should you do after to protect it, I was going to have mine soda blasted as a single block... now I'm worried.

Thanks buddy.
I think I will decide to break it apart, also to check the pistons and valves, clean and paint as you mentioned.
However, I am afraid that the painting will fall off easily. I saw several poorly done paintings falling off. Do you know what kind of paint/coat technique or brand is the best one in that case?

formerly kalgard , now KG gun kote works really well i did mine honda 350 twin aircooled head and barrel and after 5000 miles it still looks like new :) like it was just done
it not really a true paint but a sprayed on baked coating

First if you can clean the engine good before removing from frame….then you have to degrease and clean it ….and then clean it again if you decide to paint it while engine is assembled. It will take several hours and several different tools to get a rag between the fins plus lots of degreaser and cleaner. i use some micarta or nylon sheets cut down, a park bike chain cleaning tool works good also. VHT fuel proof paint looks good and holds up well. Before you spray it warm the spray can so the paint flows well. AND DON'T OVER HEAT THE CAN, you can put it is a bucket of warm water or use a heat gun but again warm not hot!

joea, can you describe what you mean when you say "micarta or nylon sheets cut down and a park bike chain cleaning tool"?

How much money do you have to spend?

Vapor blasting has no equal.
