So my winter project this year has been a '70 CL175 cafe bike. I'll post up some progress pics in a bit, but for now I need help deciding on a taillight to go with.
I think I've got it narrowed down to two styles; vintage Model A:
And this one:
There are elements to each that I like, but I just can't decide. Lemme know whatcha think!
Well first intinct is to do he vintage model A hands down - but it'd be cool to see the rest of the bike to get a feel for it - also if you flush- or almost flush-mounted the boxy one it could be really cool if your bike had a more modern style...
Im in the same boat. I can't decide which tail light to go with. I have a side mount license holder but I don't want to mount it with the plate. I'm going to mount it on the fender right behind my seat (for better visibility)... but... I don't know what to go with. I was also looking at the "Model A" or a "Lucas" style light.
Here's a shot of the bike in progress. It 's now wearing clipons and a 7" headlight from a Kawi. I'm definitely shooting for more of a vintage theme.
Ideally, I'd flush mount the Ford taillight and call it a day, but unfortunately there's not enough room back there with the battery & all. I think flush-mounting the rectangular light would give it a little too much of a modern look, if'n you know what I mean.
Agreed. I may end up going with a "Model A" as well and painting the housing black, leaving the chrome lip/cover around the lense. I dunno yet. First I wanna chop my rear fender. Let me know what you go with, and shoot some pics. The 175 is identical frame wise to the 200, so you're my best reference.
Id use the ford light as well. Once you take it out of that housing you might gain some space. You could also make some leds for the lights and mount it to the lens and save a bunch of weight and it would draw less power.
jason just had me think of something... do you have any room at all in the tail?
you could just buy a "Model A" lense (they sell them seperately) and "french" it into the seat. Just using the lense would give you all the room needed. Just use a dremel or rotary to cut the seat to the exact shape. Then mount a few LED's behind the lense and your set.

Yah, I think you're on the right track; having just the bezel & lens hanging off the back looks much better. I'd hoped to somehow be able to work the tag light into the picture but I guess I'll go back to the drawing board for that.
Gonna pick this up and see what I can do. Figure I can just clip the bulb connectors off and hardwire directly into the harness. Not like I'll be replacing the LED's anytime in this century.

...which poses my nest question; is there anything special that needs to be done to accommodate LED's? I've seen references to running a resistor inline...
I'm afraid the LED/plastic lens aspect detracts a bit from the vintage-y theme, but the one thing it has going for it is that it's bright as shit; the brake light literally hurts the eyeballs.
