help me pick a tank!!!

domer

Been Around the Block
all right, now that ive got my seat some what sorted out (upholstery will come later) i need to pick which tank i should use. when i bought my little 500 it came with 2 and im on the fence as to what to use... i know to each his own and all that but im really on the fence here.
first one is the one i am currently using, off a late 70's hawk (pos automatic as i understand) has a few poorly filled dents (i really suck at bodywork) but im sure with PATIENTCE i can fix em... little bit of rust inside that needs to be addressed, pics are shitty but i think they get the point across if this takes off ill get better pics

this one i believe is off a 550, somebody rattle canned the shit out of this poor tank. right over the stock paint, the stripes which i can still see lead me to believe 550. its been sealed and inside is clean as a whistle. no dents or dings, but is gonna require some serious work before paint. who ever tried to fill in the emblem area should be banned from use of bondo oh and it needs a petcock. but it flows with the seat fairly well... im lost...

hmmm...decisions decisions. thanks all!

Yeah, I say no contest! #2 is the clear winner! It follows the lines of your seat, like they were made for each other! Don't even think about #1 with that tail! The line of the tank and seat matching really completes the overall look of a good cafe build, #2 with that tail makes it look right!

#1 more lines and gives the tank more shape

Joe, inhale real big, look at the pics again! I think you will see that #2 is tits with that tail!

Remember, inhale, you must not be on your best game yet! ;)

You are right!!!! i did not look at this pic, the lines in that tank do not flow at all with that seat
the seat has a smooooth flow to it and this tank is a bit boxy...

I dont know if I would tell joe to inhale. You have no idea what he might be inhaling. It could impair his judgement. ;D I say tank two also. What do you want to bet he goes with one :D

#2 it is, going to require some work but it does flow much better. im actually starting to think its a 750 k2 tank, but wtf do i know! either way ill have some better pics up in a few days. thanks for the help!!!

Damn Aussies always stirring the shit... Hows the bike comin Paul?

Slowly but surely champ.

I have a suggestion, just to stir the pot some more. Is it worth putting the lines of the first tank onto the seat cowl...you know those two ridges along the top of the tank? You could spend some time with some bondo molding and shapin the cowl to suit the tank instead of using the bondo on the other tank to suit the cowl. Get what i mean? Then you'd just make a mold from that seat you've modified then make a brand new seat from the mold. I'm just really digging that first tank.

Well that is a whole new can of worms, but if I where to go this route, I would just build a new tail from foam and leave that one to be used again! It would most likely wind up about the same in labor, but you would have two seats! Plus a nice seat to match that tank would be cool as I really have never seen one.

hmmm... i do love the look of the hawk tank, which is why it was on there in the first place... another project another day. either way im keepin the other tank, i always thought it would look nice with a ducktail. or as staffy said build one. time to find another project ;D

too narrow and has an offset cap, not a CB750!
im actually 99% sure its a 73 750. due too the shape of the stripe, and the fact that it was brown tank with a gold white and black stripe. started stripping the paint, didnt phase the stripes much, and i was able to peel them back to reveal what i belive is the stock color of the tank. brown with a black insert... but ive been wrong before. from what i can find 73 did have an offset cap... ??? now im really confused

I am calling no one dumb, and I by no means am all knowing, I simply said that because I have spend tons on time on deviant1's Dolores build and it is a 72 CB750. center cap and much wider! I was thinking maybe 450f but I could be wrong too! Who cares, its a bitchin tank!
