Here is an interesting dilemma - cert. and bike shop woes

Coast to Coast
Tryin to explain this saga as quickly as possible:

Take bike to shop friday, they say its too late, must safety it on it saturday. Then on saturday, no one calls me. I go there, and no one has shown up for work. Today (tuesday) they work on bike, signals dont blink. I tell them it must be running, they say no blink and cant find flashers. Didnt apologize for Saturday of course...

Talk to my bikey friend who did wiring. Its a solid state system, bike needs to be revved a bunch to get blinkin and the flashers are in the bucket which the shop has been in twice but swears still can find no flashers. Bike shops now closed. So i will call tomorrow, and bikey friend is sure shop will tell me its no good this way. Bike shop wants 1 hour labour + for wiring work = 100 bucks

SO what to do? get bike out of there? too bad I have no truck and friends are pretty busy. Pay the 100 bucks (on top of the 80 dollar safety cost)? Another bike shops says i need 2 mirrors and a chain guard for a safety, so its not goin there.

This fuckin blows

thanks for listenin/readin

Could a new battery get them blinking and save me lettin this inept shop hack into my wiring?

thanks for any help guys! My bike is 2 hours away, and all i have is a small window on the weekends to get things done (mto, etc) so each day I lose ends up being a week....i am getting desperate now

Get the bike out of there. Any 'shop' that can't figure out a signal light circuit is not worth dealing with.

You can get a 10 day temp permit that does not require a safety. If you want to ride it, all you need is ownership and insurance and go to the Ministry for your temp permit. It's like $15 or something.

Why is the bike in Oshawa if that's 2 hours away from you? Getting your signal lights flashing should be simple. You should NOT need to rev the engine or even have it running to get them flashing - that's nonsense too. Signals need to be able to work even if the bike is not running at all.

Sounds like you need a new flasher relay - $5 at Canadian Tire and 2 minutes of work to put it in. Lots of folks on the board who would be glad to help I'm sure - including me if you had the bike in the Toronto area.

Do they work when you rev it high? I know that when my battery is running low, the signals stop working. Get it out of that shop, toss it on a trickle charger.

You only need your left side mirror for the MTO. No?

And thats the bottom line.....

Also, I don't know how this was wired but the way its sounding, there could be more problems down the road from here.

My friend who wired it, made it so that the bike must be running for them to blink. Not just a key turned to the 'on' position.

He buried the flashers in the headlight bucket apparently, and the shop says they have looked twice and do not see them in there. So since I am not good with a wrench let alone wiring, I cant see me being able to figure out on friday, in time to get to the MTO.

I am in Oshawa because I got a job here teaching at UOIT just at the tail end of the build, so the bike was finished last weekend and I tried to get it in for the safety then. I finish at 10am every friday so its easy to get back to Niagara, but with no truck or tralier, and only one business day to play with, it makes things tuff.

I think the temporary pass would be the best idea. I am stuck in the middle, because the guy who built my bike with me is the type that always swears he is right, and its sounds like he wired the thing oddly if the signals should always work in the first place, and the bike shop i owe for the attempted safety and maybe they are right that i need new flashers anyways.

All of this is water under the bridge anyways, as earlier today I told the shop to fix it all up: I wanna ride asap, the cost is relative to my enjoyment and time savings

Thanks Tim for offering your help. Once I ride the bike around my hometown with friends a bit, I will get it up to Oshawa, and then come to T.O. for one of the meets you guys are always havin. Obviously I dont have much mechanical knowledge to bring to the table for anyone, but hey....i make a mean grilled cheese and I will probably fall off this bike in front of everyone at some point, so that might be good for a chuckle :D

Thanks guys, you are all correct. I took the easy, costly way out, but the peace of mind and saving of time is worth it to me. I am off to look at your pics and read your musings now.......

About the mirrors- One shop told me I needed a chain guard, 2 mirrors, and the bike must idle fine completely on its own. (hence why i went to the shady shop with my one mirror and no chain guard...it would cost me time and money to source another guard)

The shop was right about the chain guard but wrong about the 2 mirrors.

Have you changed the ownership into your name yet?
If not then don't.
The MTO will give you a new one marked Unfit making it imposible to get a temp plate.

Just show them the bill of sale, signed ownership and proof of insurance and ask for the temp NOT a new ownership.

Hope this helps.

The lights worked fine after the wiring was finished. Then it sat all weekend, then I hauled it to the shop. I am glad it will be all sorted. As long as the shop is being honest, the money paid is no big deal to me.

Crab I did not sign the ownership yet. I am not sure what your post is really saying though. I actually have a second frame and engine, and I am going to sign everything in my name. Next winter I plan to chop and modify the second frame to a greater extent than this current one, and powdercoat instead of spray it. After next winter, I should be rocking a more truely "custom" 750 than I would consider my current rendition to be. I wanna go with possibly a sporty front end, custom tripple, dummy lights, gauges and hang a SuckerPunch Sally oil bag.

No actually I bought it way back in January....figured the work would be done on it in March...I was dreamin. I just posetd pics of it in the Projects section here
