Thid is my 5th bike, but the last 2 were bad projects that i shouldnt have gotten into.
I bought a cm200 that runs, but needs tires and maybe a tuneup.
it needs a battery, too, but very easily kicks on the first try, and runs.
yay!
im trying to make this into a cafe-ish commuter for work.
my last 2 bikes were turds, im happy to have a running bike again.
the previous owner said he topped out a little under 60mph, but im hoping to do better than that.
the left pipe has a huge dent in it, so once i get that pulled out i hope to see an improvement.
plans at this point are modest. Lower bars, tires, and a cheap battery.
I also want a thinner seat. i might drastically cut down the stocker's foam to make it thinner. it has to be cheap and look ok.
if anyone has suggestions or tips, id like to hear it. my last 2 projects were huge dissapointments.
is the cm200.anything.like the cb200? are parts interchangeable?
also i might be interested in changint the sprocket size for a gain in top speed. suggestions?
i think i saw it somewhere on here, but i found a small cb that the owner had uncovered it, cut out some foam with a bread knife, and recovered it. it looked pretty great. im going to try that tomorrow if i get time. i might be able to pop it out in the morning.
ive got the wheels off, waiting for tires.
i also made a big risky move earlier today. like i had mentioned above, there isnt a lot of money for this build. today i signed up for a credit card. i have been working an extra job on sundays, that gets me around 480/mo, but that's been dissapearing before it sees bike. early next week, i hope to have tires. im not sure if i will order the tires online and get some irons and try to do this myself, or if i will pay more to have a shop do it.
we dont have any credit cards, and have no debt. ... which is great, but we've been living check to check. i think this is the first credit card i have ever owned.
My first bit of advice: use that card VERY sparingly. I'm sure you're aware of that, but I just want to stress it.
Next bit of advice: find a service manual and do every last part of maintenance before worrying about the seat. If it's topping out at 60mph, something isn't working the way it should.
My best advise is instead of that credit card open a Pay-pal account. At least that is the way I do it. Any windfall or spare change goes into the "Bike Fund" That secret place in the back of the wallet. Then into a savings account where it is next transfered to Pay-pal.
If you don't have enough in your account, don't buy it. Keep stashin your allowance and eventually you will have enough for the next purchase. No intrest charges!
That's why my builds take a year or more. Sure if I was to order all I needed, I could finish a bike in a season, but I'd be up to my neck in hock and have to sell the finished bike to pay surmounted bill. I'd rather nickle and dime it and be never the wiser in the end of how much I really spent.
Nice project, careful with the card, I am locked into a 5 year loan to pay off credit cards we used to pay bills when my wife lost her job. They suck. We are now on a budget and I have to wait until the money is there to buy parts etc. Hoosiers idea is solid, you can keep the card and pre-pay on it as well so you can buy stuff online like his paypal idea, pay the card off before they hit you with interest, it can sink you fast. On a postive note there is a lot of common parts for those bikes if you cross reference honda fiches etc. the motor is basically the 250 rebel and CB250 Nighthawk motor and so there is loads of spares etc.
+1 on the Paypal account. NO CC's, bad for long term finances. Also, you can place mad money in Paypal when you sell things on ebay that you may have to liquidate for future projects.
I totally feel you on being strapped for cash. All my expensive bits came around pay bonuses, birthday, etc. I've got a bunch of things like bars, grips and a couple other things I won't be using I can send your way for the cost of shipping. PM me if you're interested.
I kinda like what can be done with these funky little bikes. Interested to see where it goes.
sonickjk, nice seat. im going to try for a thinner seat than that on mine. i dont have a very long ride to work, about 15 minutes, so comfort isnt that big of an issue. im also going to se if i can make the seat a little thinner.
and ratpunk, thanks big time, sir. every bit helps right now. i havent bought anything yet since getting the bike about 3 weeks ago.
