Honda 4's CB650, CB650c, CB650SC owners!?

Hi all,
Fairly new to DTT...But digging the amount if information and tips. I haven't yet found any threads that discuss Honda 4's or more specifically CB650's. Okay, so they are the bastard child of the CB's, but they can be found cheap and can easily be made into very cool custom bikes.

Anyway, I'm looking to maybe start a string for CB650 owners/builders, people with experience working on these...How about I start?

I purchased a 1982 CB650SC nighthawk last summer (my first bike and first build). I rode it for a day and then straight away tore into it. The first things to go were all the plastic, then the air boxes (more on that in a bit), handle bars chain guard, etc. you get the idea. I started ordering all the kit that I thought would make the bike perform better and that I thought looked cool. Enter air box...I tore the air box off (it was cracked and had been repaired) and threw on the pods. Yea it looked cool, but I fought with it for a week trying to just get it to idle again. This was my first experience learning that what i think are minor cosmetic/performance mods can turn out to be quite a bit more complicated (note to self: carefully think through every mod and try to understand every effect that it might have.)

I did a bench syc and am using factory jet sizes, with air/fuel mixture screws turned 1/2 turn past recommended (pods). I rode it this way for about eight weeks, tolerating a lag upon acceleration and laziness throughout the gear range. I also put up with oil leaks and "band-aided" them as best I could, it seemed to only leak badly when I was pushing it (75-80 mph seems like it should be more?). I couldn't afford a tach so i did and getto style elimination.

Rebuild Redux:
I now have the motor out, the head cover and head off and will begin inspecting. Looking into the cylinders and on to the pistons #1 shows more carbon deposits than #'s2 & 3, #4 is completely clean, the way I had installed it. The combustion chambers look similar except #4 and its spark plug are oil fouled.

Here is where I need some tips/help/suggestions, Where do I begin trouble shooting and repairing? Valves, Rings, bearings...? I will post my progress as I go.

Cheers!

As much as I hate to point you away from DTT, sohc4.net is a phenomenal resource for the old Honda 4s. Grip-loads of info.

The 82 650 nighthawk had a factory recall for leaking head gaskets. They would leak lots of oil out the side. Plan on replacing that. I really liked the shape of the bodywork on that model and hated the paint and bad chrome stripes. They could also use some help in the wheels and suspension. The 19 - 16 comstar combination did not help handling then or tire selection, now.

Tudor9,
I don't recall what size they were. If you want to go with pods check the diameter of your intake and get the appropriate size pods. I had to use some radiator hose to put #1 and #4 at an angle to clear the frame...but they are all in the trash now! I put pods on my bike because I liked the sleek look and mistakenly thought the "performance" look meant performance. This is not the case. I spent a lot of time on forums which talk about this; i wish i would have paid more attention and never used the pods. It would have saved me time, frustration and money. The fact of the matter is...your bike will not perform the way it should using pods, without making substantial changes to the carburetors. Can it be done? Sure, but by people more qualified/experienced than me with the right tools. If you are like me, a garage tinkerer, expect a lot of frustration and spotty performance at best, you may have to install a dynojet kit ($125). Admittedly the air box is ugly so if the look is what you are after and don't mind the performance drop, cool. I ended up choosing performance and putting the airbox back on.

TolChock,
Thanks for the input. I have read that the CB650's do have a problem with pods. I think I will be going another route unless I get antsy and decide to mess with the carbs. I def. want performance. I appreciate the heads up!

I went with Velocity stacks after my Pods gave me hell... and they work great.

If you are riding in the street this is dangerous for the life of your engine. Your carb are ingesting dirt, sand and you engine is going to grind itself to death.
