I got this Honda CB 450 from 1974 cheap from a buddy who put it away in 1996. Needs alot of polishing and have to strip the entire bike because of a bad paintjob on the frame. It used to have a red frame then it was repainted black and now you can see the red come forward again.
I wanne redo the frame and rear swingarm in red, the tank and seat i want in silver i think.
The engine runs very good, but i need to redo the carbs. I see they sell kits here http://siriusconinc.com/default.asp not sure wich one i need thou. The engine is not a 74. It has 5 speed transmission but not sure wich year the engine and the carbs are.
Im not sure if i wanne spend alot of cash or keep it on a budget. I would like better brakes and im having some ideas of a more modern brake like a did on my Yamaha SR 500 from 1978.
I also need a good needle bearing for the rear swingarm to improve stability in higher speeds.

All in good time i guess. Its now summer and i wont be doing much unless... the summer gets cancelled here in Norway. It has happend before :-\

Posting some pics here so you can see what i have to work with. The fairing im not sure ill use, to much restriction on my movement and it complicates the work.

Looks like a great find. The black tank is great looking!

Are you sure you need to rebuild the carbs? Chances are a good cleaning will do the trick.

Should be fun. Keep us posted.

The carbs wasent to bad. But the gaskets needs replacing after standing in a small shed since 1996. The tank i got really cheap from a fellow member in a local veteran bikers club i am in.
I now have ordered carbie repair kits and some jet kits as well, also some elctrical tuning stuff. Now all i have to do is..well start to tear it apart :)

FWIW, I am also doing a '74 CB450. Mine sat in a barn for over 25 years. I simply cleaned the carbs and it then ran perfect with them prior to me tearing the entire bike down for the cafe treatment I am doing to it.

jeez, at least you guys know the history of ur bike, all I know is that the last time my cb360 that im working on now was plated was in 79, and it came to me with a bit more than just 4 years worth of wear. I seriously wish my bike could just like speak to me and tell me all of its life stories. From off the assembly line, to first purchase, to storage, to ruins, then back to its former glory (or as close as I can get it).

Awesome! I have a 74 cb450 as well. It was such a lucky find. 450's are starting to dominate!

My bike sat for about 9 years. The PO's brother got it running back when he was 16 but it was too big for him so they just let it sit, until I took. :)

Keep us updated! BTW, the fairing looks pretty cool. You never know, you might change your mind and end up using it!

I did start the engine before i brought the bike to my mechanic place. It ran very good, but i used a fuel tank for a outboard boat engine. Had to pump the fuel into the carbs and i would only run in interwalls since i couldnt keep both carbs filled with fuel. At least i know the engine runs very good. The repair kits have new gaskets in them. Was about 20 bucks for a kit so not to much yet.
Either way im looking forward to this and sort of dreading it at the same time. Good thing i got a mechanical genius as a good friend :)

Ok.. its on the lift and ready for stripdown. When that will happen i have no idea as its good weather for riding at the moment.. :)

Im now struggling with if i should sell this project or do a budget version of it.
Problem is that every thing i cant do myself is so expensive here i Norway. Chrome for example or powder coating has insane prices.

Any ideas on how i get the rims done cheap? Sandblast and paint them? Or will the paint not stick as the surface is chrome?

Any ideas on how to do this cheap is welcome! :)

Im now converting a Yamaha XT600E into a supermotard. Does that fit in the fighter section?

Rain is pooring down here so no riding.....argh!!

Appliance Epoxy WILL stick to basically anything, as long as it is prepped right. Check out Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy. It's hard stuff and it's what a handful of guys recommend on the forum. I've use it to paint my rims and several pieces and I'm very impressed with it. The finish is nice, smooth, and hard. It's not recommended that you prime whatever surface you are painting though.

Just looking back on your pics - I don't see any rust on the spokes or rims. Maybe they will come up OK with just a polish??

And you can use paint instead of powdercoating on your other parts. It'll work as long as you prep correctly.

check out the $50 thread man i did a complet how to on doing your wheels low $

The rims look ok, but when you look closer they have some scars from when people have changed tiers on them. And that wont go away with a new polish-job.
But im gonna take one of the wheels home and try some Chrome polish in my livingrooom, just to see how good i can get it with simple polishing.

Argh..... i washed down the rear rim and looked it over. I need new rims for sure. Spokes i found a set for front and rear wheel 70 bucks on ebay. But the rims i have no idea were to find cheap?
I have no problem buying them new as long as its not too expensive. As i see it, the rims are one of the few things i cant save or polish up on this bike.
I have to blast the frame and rear svingarm, the engine i do not have to open, but it needs polishing. The front forks needs polish. Front fender im not sure ill use the original one.
Rear brake is brand new i found out. Front brake i have to do someting with. Either redo it or try and mount some other brake.

I guess ill check mrcycles.com, have a local dealer who can hook me up :)
