Honda cb350

So my last post wasnt letting me upload my pictures so i thought i would try again, This is a 1971 honda i managed to pick up the other day, the seller had claimed that he had been managing to kick over the engines and that the pistons were free but when i picked it up for some reason he couldnt demonstrate this. i got the bike home as was still unable to get the kickstarter to move anything so i started the tear down.

Got the carbs off which were in overall pretty good condition, one was missing a clip inside and had a tear in the diaphragm, they are in the process of being cleaned now

so it looks like ive figured out how to post all the pictures, the file size was just far too large so here we go.
i took off the clutch plate and most of the bits seem there, the ball bearing tried to make a run for it but i tracked it down. the spring is missing though so that must be found. but doesnt look too bad all in all.

all the superficial stuff came off nice and easy so i have some parts for sale if anyone needs...

Have just been held up on getting the engine out by 2 stubborn bolts so am unsure as to what to do with them. it is the bolt holding the brake lever on is stopping one of the engine mount bolts coming out i think?

Also managed to get the wheel off and after being worries that the rust may have been worse it doesnt look too bad, a good clean and relacing and it should be good to go! And this is where i left it today. expect more tomorrow!

so i managed to sneak down to work on the bike a bit today, am unsure how to post text between each picture though, so i started work and my ratchet handle kept on slipping gears it was long over due a new set so i went to treat myself to one. all in all i got the engine out started tearing that down and cleared all but the swing arm and chain off the frame. the swing arm is still being pretty stubborn but i shall see to that tomorrow.

Also used tipping the motor in the frame to the side which proved a lot easier than the other way.

Have also done the vinegar in the petrol tank method which worked amazingly unfortunately got a bit carried away and forgot to take a before picture but it worked amazingly. if anyone is interested i shook the tank with a handful of screws for 5 mins, emptied the tank of screws and filled to the brim with cheap vinegar. i left over night then drained the vinegar then sloshed in some coca cola to neautralise the vinegar, then flushed out with water, after emptying the water i added some petrol with 2 stroke oil to coat the inside. It seems to have worked perfectly

having a couple of issues getting the rocker case off but will tackle that in the morning, also took the front end off, the rim looks pretty bad but again im hoping its not too bad after a good clean.

No clue what was wrong with the kick start still but i guess i shall get to that.

Also tried to take a couple of pics of the inside of the cylinder but that didnt work out quite so well, i wasnt quite sure what to look for with that either.

also maybe a silly question but my front forks have the springs on the outside, usually they are on the inside so just wondering that the deal is here? also how would i go about servicing the front suspension, new oil and springs etc i presume?

There were several versions of forks on the 350's. I believe the earlier versions had external springs while the later versions had the internal springs. As for servicing, I would replace the fork seals and change the oil. Also, make sure there is no rust or pitting on the tubes where they pass through the seals. If there is, you will only tear up the new seals. The springs are probably fine but I would check in a shop manual and see what the operation specifications for them are just to be sure.

ok awesome thanks a lot :) ill look into all that when i hit it tomorrow! i presume i will need something to compress the shocks when i open them? ill look into making something for that

So making some progress again today manages to get that stubborn castle nut off the swing arm with a breaker bar and some muscle. Working on the engine today shall post some more pictures soon but the rocker case / cover is still being pretty stubborn i have been working from a couple of different manuals but must be failing somewhere along the way, if anyone could weigh in that would be great :)

What is the issue with the rocker case/cover? How far have you disassembled? Do you have the camshaft out already?

Hi, i have taken off the very top cover so the rockers and cam chain are visable and have removed the rocker arm pin nuts, the manual says then to remove side covers and rocker arm pins, i cant seem to remove the side covers and pins?

So quick update we realised that the sides, point cover things were just really stuck so we managed to remove one to access the rocker pins but the other side remains stubborn, have we missed anything here?

Try to rotate the rocker arm pins to remove tension on camshaft. Should be easier to remove then.

Awesome that did the job! it was all just really sticking somehow but with a bit of elbow greese,
so today i took apart frame completley and got out the wire brush and pressure washer and gave everything a good cleaning, its not perfect but it will do untill everything is stripped down for paint.

Finally got to tear into the engine and made some decent progress with that, some of the rocker feet have some light scratches and so does the cam shaft i am unsure what to do about this the manual says they can be rubbed down with an oil stone? got down to have a look at the valves and the pistons and cylinders and it doesnt look too bad, i guess everything will be checked to make sure its all within specification and then clean and rebuild

The picture of the rocker feet look a lot worse than they are, the very smeary bits is oil on them.

A little weird thing though in the manual it says that the bolt that comes out of the cam sprocket should have 9 printed on it but the ones i took out have a 11 printed on them?? Anyone know what that is about?
