Honda CB360 Advancer

Been Around the Block
So one of my Mikes XS coils went bad, the left side was not sparking at all. I ordered a replacement and now I am taking advantage of this downtime to start an Electronic Ignition swap. I started modestly by taking off the points and points backing plate. What really interested me was the advancer!

This is the unit that is on my bike. I poked around at it and found that it was really tweaky and it was really easy to flick the "arms" around with minimal effort. All in all, it just seemed really loose.

I found the one from my parts bike in a baggy in the basement and took a look at it. The springs were a lot stiffer and overall seemed to be in 10x better shape. Also it looked slightly different too!

A look on my OEM parts supplier website lists 2 advancers for the CB360 (1974-1976):
30220-312-004 (Available) - This is the one from my parts bike
30220-369-154 (NLA) - This is the one currently on the CB360

I was told that the 312 one (parts bike) is also the advancer for other Honda models and MIGHT not be interchangeable as the OEM supplier claims. From the HondaTwins forum member: "The 312 advancer MAY work to run the engine, but the torque/HP curve and full advance point (RPM) will/could differ as these are influenced by spring strength and flyweight weight."

Should I continue using the 369 one despite the fact that it looks like the springs are weak, or should I try out the 312 one which is in MUCH better condition?

As long as it fits and the springs are strong enough to close at low revs, it won't make a lot of difference.

Stronger springs mean that it reaches full advance at higher rpms, softer springs advance quicker.
Bigger weights advance quicker, lighter weights advance slower.

In either case, full advance is usually by somewhere around 3,000 to 4000 rpms. Technically the advice you got was correct, but I would be surprised if you notice any difference. Try the 312 and see what happens. If it feels sluggish below say 5k, swap back and try back to back and see if there's any difference.

So after some research and calling up my trusted OEM dealer, it turns out the difference between the two is that one is made by Toyo and the other by Denso. I was assured that they are interchangeable, but will try the 312, since it is in way better shape.
