Honda CB500 K0 Fork Question

"Man is born free, and he is everywhere in chains"
I was disassembling my forks and with one fork the lock nut (under the top fork bolt) that secures the spring on the damper rod took some ingenuity and a lot of heat to get off. The other one went way wrong. It appears that in trying to loosen it, it took out all the threads with it. It now spins but doesn't make any progression, forwards or backwards.

That damper is trashed now, I assume (if not let me know), so I'm going to resort to buying used forks off ebay and start from sq. 1. So I don't F-up the forks I'm about to purchase, how the hell are you suppose to get those things off?!

While I'm at it, what would cause noise in the forks and sharp vibration when going over bumps? Sounded like something was loose and is why I pulled everything apart to inspect in the first place?

...and should the compressed part of the spring be at the top or bottom?

Thanks!
