Honda CL350 air filter /exhaust removal

Been Around the Block
I want to check my air filters on my 72 CL350 but I can't get to it because the scrambler exhaust is blocking me from removing the cover.
I looked at the shop manual and it says that " the muffler must be removed first"

The instructions for the muffler removal seem confusing to me. Do they mean I have to remove the entire exhaust from where it connects to the engine? If so, do I need to anything special to re-attach it? (gaskets, sealer, ect.) The manual doesn't mention anything other than reattaching it.

It seems like a huge PITA to check the filters

Yes you will have to remove the entire exhaust system. Unless I am mistaken. Should be to nuts for each header at the head and probably a bracket mounting them to the bikes near where your legs sets.

Generally you will want to put new exhaust gaskets on it after you take the headers off.

They go into the head before you slide the headers on. Kind of like a crush washer

They look like so

Aw man... I hate having to wait for parts before I can do stuff.

I wanna ride ... not wait for parts. bleh

Hahah totally know the feeling. Not replacing those gaskets wont kill you as long as they arent paper thin, and you make sure to remount your headers nice and evenly.

Do what you have to do, put the pipes on and ride it while you wait for the gaskets to arrive. Thats what I did. ;D

I have to wait for my NOS OEM Air filters to arrive from ebay anyhow... I guess I will wait for the gaskets and do everything at the same time.

Those pipes come off and go back on pretty easily with nothing more than a wrench. Ensure the headers are tight and you'll likely be fine. It just looks like more effort than it is.

Welp . I tried to take the bike out for a ride today and I couldn't get it idling well enough to leave the garage.
The new plugs I bought are the wrong kind. I guess they are for a car...the tips were too fat to fit on my plug cables. The part number is identical ...weird.

Anyhow... I got brave and remove the exhaust system to inspect the are filters . This is what they look like

Not sure how bad that is but I reinstalled them back on the bike and tried to run it without the side covers , hoping it might breathe better. It didn't make a difference.

I also noticed that there was a hose disconnected from a nipple on the bottom of the right carb.

I am waiting for new air filters and will get proper spark plugs but if that doesn't work I will have to call in a pro.

Thanks.

I think I will adjust the valve clearance and set the static ignition timing before I restart it.
