Hi everyone this is my first post! Looks like you have a wonderful community of people on here so hopefully someone can help me! My brother and I just bought a Honda XL175 1974 we're planning on turning it into a tracker/cafe. It's currently in pretty bad condition and have just started working through all the issues...

My first problem... The bike idles (a little roughly) but whenever any revs are given the bike conks out. If you let the throttle go straight away it will return to idle without stopping. My initial thought is that maybe the jets have some crap in them? Or the advance timing unit is really retarded from the previous owner playing with it? Does that sound like a good place to start? Open to any suggestions!!

Cheers,

TM

The carb should be your first project. with any bike that my buddy, brother or myself have bought, the carbs are the first to be removed, torn down, and CLEANED. you should hold off on the points till the carb has been properly done, because they maybe in perfect order. I have a 1981 XL185s it has CDI instead of points. but my 1972 CL350K4 has points! ;D Cheers and make sure every passage in that carb flows!

Pulled the carb out and all the jets and everything are fine and clear however the rest of it is pretty rough (wrong screws some have been glued in?!. The carb is not original and has been replaced by another at some point.

I would prefer to just replace the lot with an aftermarket one if possible. I found this one: http://www.bikebandit.com/mikuni-round-slide-vm-series-carburetor?m=9379 I really have no idea what I should be looking for in regards to bore size and spigot size, should it be the same as the previous one or can I just use a generic one? The old one was: 41mm spigot and 28.5 bore.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Unfortunately I don't have any help for you, but I just got a 75 XL175 so I'm watching your thread to see what I can learn.

Good luck!

Get the right carb... And you cant tell if its good just by eyeballing it really. It needs to be 100% clean. Also, get a proper manual and set everything to factory specs. Adjust valves, timing, etc...
