Hondacati GSX-R CL350

A lot of work done today on the CL.
I final welded the lower cross-over tubes, filed them off, and moved on to cleaning up the rest of the tabs.

Cleaned off both bottom rails to make room for the shock mount plate...

About halfway thru the frame mod process...
Last to go will be the center stand pivot mount. (It's very convenient now for mock up purposes.)
I also spent some time buzzing in additional welds over the factory welds.
Missing and shitty factory welds fattened up a bit.
* We need all the help we can get. LOL

Making of the top shock mount plate...
the template is just a general shape that I used to locate my pivot point after mocking it all back together again.
I'm cutting out some profiles so its not a giant ugly monolithic plate hanging there between the rails.
I still have to fabricate the eyelets for the 3.926" space to be filled by the rocker linkage.
Tomorrow, perhaps.
;)

Laying out the plates for welding...
I removed the shock link upper mount bushing and bolt, then bolted the plates as they would be at final install.
I also made a similar bolt in one of the other holes to achieve parallel spacing of the plates.
After double-checking for square and even...I burned them into place.

*Because of the offset to the left side I had to trim away more of the under-frame rail to allow room for the weld.

I've also decided to slide in a 1/2" solid round above the plate (inside the thin pressed factory frame rail)
to tie the top and bottom lip of the pressed frame together. This will ultimately insure that the plate cant be lifted
by the force of the shock.

Top shock mount completed and installed...
After checking and re-checking its position, I tacked it in place,
then disassembled everything again for final welding.
I did find that a piece of 1/2" round stock beat in perfectly on top of the plate to hold it securely in place.
I filled the entire cavity with stringers, ground them smooth, then laid in a final pass hot and heavy to the 1/4" shock plate.
We don't want any surprises during a twisty 'G-out' at 80mph.
;)

I also started narrowing the center frame member to accommodate the CB160 tank.
I removed the rear tabs on the tank to clean up the back area and to make room for fitment,
opting for underside mounts later. But, the frame is still too fat.
I torched and carefully hammered in some clearance near the rear of the tank.
It was almost enough to fit, except for the rearmost wishbone area of the top tube.
I've marked out crescent shapes to remove material to allow additional narrowing...
but I might take a day off from building.
Instead I'm making a trip to the powdercoaters to drop off the wheels.
I need to get rubber mounted to double-check my geometry.
**The cool thing with the Ducati rear link is the adjustable ride height rod. It allows fine tuning after everything is in place!

Looking good! Really enjoyed reading through the build so far. Hope the cb 160 tank works out for you, really like the look. I used a cb77 tank on my cl and i am happy with it. The tunnel was wide enough but not really deep enough.

Yeah, having some issues with the little 160 tank. I narrowed the frame at the wishbone to be able to slide the tank to the rear, width-wise its good...
Again, as you stated the tunnel just isn't deep enough. I may have to go a different direction. It would barely cover the electrics. I love the look of the tank, but it doesn't satisfy me as far as placement. Your 77 looks good on there...the 160 might be a tad shallower yet. Maybe go back to a CB tank.
I thought of going with a radical aftermarket café...something maybe in carbon fibre, but then all identity would be lost as a Honda. LOL
Maybe a clean factory paint tank, with a solo seat is an option.

I don't think that tank looks too bad on there. Is it possible to just cut the tunnel out and weld a deeper one in there? Personally i wouldn't put a CB tank on there too boring, but that's jut me ;)

I agree...about the boring part. It would have to be a spectacular example to be awesome. There is the issue of the bikes identity...
Ive thought custom café tank/seat, but then nothing else is left 'Honda' to the Honda. LOL. (I really like the 160 tank) The tunnel on the 160 couldn't be pulled up much further. It's nearly at the filler neck now. It's plainly just different than the CB350. Maybe I'll take another look at the tunnel??

Some long days at work are keeping me out of the garage anyway. ;) Cooler weather and a few days off coming up Monday...back to the drawing board.

These have left for powdercoating...
Going with transparent copper. Apparently its a two-stage process... Chrome, then copper.
Photo's when they arrive, of course.

Like Johnu said, maybe you could get the tunnel cut and modified, especially if the metal is in good shape shouldn't be too bad to weld, that tank would really make the bike
