How do I make my own petcock?(without having it leak)

So, I have a 80 CB750c with a tank that looks like it should be there but the petckock i purchased for an 80cb750c did not work. I had 2 people recheck the numbers. I then thought to myself " The frame may say 1980 cb750c but that just may not be the tank that orgionally came on the bike" Not a problem. The only other petcock that the dealership had in mind was $149. I decided that this wasnt the petcock i wanted to buy. I then went to Lowes and bought some brass fittings and attempted to fab a petcock up. I found that bung was 1/2 inch flare fitting. However, transfering the 1/2 inch down to a 1/4 hose fitting and including a lever seems to be some work. Its a little ugly but i got it all to fit. Will i still get gas if this contraption hangs lower than the hole for the carb? Will the carbs suck the gas like a vacum or does it all work by gravity? Can I use pipe tape on all of the threads to prevent leakage or is there something else i need to use? Im at work now but Ill take pictures of all of this as soon as I get home.

The tank is higher than carb so gravity still works.
use clear fuel line and you can see when water/dirt collects in the low area

what the best way to prevent the leakage? pipe tape around the threads? thread locker wont hold up to gas will it?

There are fuel resistant sealers in parts stores. More of a gasket maker/ silicone. Just check the fine print- it has to say fuel resistant.

Do you have a picture of the tank in question? Somebody here could probably identify it.
