How long can I run bike with the stator cover off?

Been Around the Block
Doing the Timing and when I took off the stator cover I lost a good bit of oil (cl350). How long can I run the bike safely with the reduced amount of oil? Can I rip it down the street to see if it's running ok before I put cover back on and top off the oil?

NO...if you lean left more of it may pour out. Its only 3 screws...just put em back in.

Why would you need to ride the bike to check timing? Use a timing gun to adjust advance.

Set the bike on center stand OR stick a piece of wood under the side stand. Get it as close to straight up as you can. THEN take the cover off, there will be very little leakage after the first tablespoon or so.

IF you so feel the need to ride the thing around, go buy another cover, take a hole saw and drill a 1 1/2 inch hole right where it needs to be in the cover and then GLUE a piece of plexy glass or lexan in the hole and put THAT cover on. Then you can see the marks without making a mess all over. Otherwise don't ride with out the stator cover on.

Oil loss aside, riding the bike for any length of time with any engine covers off is an invitation for disaster. Your stator is a real bad place to get moisture, dirt, road grime, etc.

yep and depending on the bike, ripping down the street will only make the oil pressure potentially pop the plug out, draining you oil all over the place and your rear tire. Not Good at all

Oh ok. Had no idea but now I get it. I'm having a hard time seeing the timing marks with my strobe, so was just going to see if the bike ran decent with the current position of the pamco plate.

Doing it at night isn't really a great option; neighbors are too nice and my bike is too loud.
