How much do you guys pay for a mount n balance?

Just dropped off my front wheel and tube for the CB200 and the bill to have one tire mounted and balanced was $35. I was kinda surprised it was this high. Is that normal?

Well, depends on the shop. If you were doing two wheels, they might have cut you a deal, but these days in a large shop labor rates go at a good $80+ per hour, and they're gonna tack on materials costs (balancing weights, the soap or whatever they spray on the beads etc.). So say 15 mins labor ($20) + materials etc and you hit $35 pretty quickly.

Might have been $60 for a pair - who knows. I probably paid $30 per wheel last time - can't recall exactly.

It takes me way too freaking long, but I mount and balance my own tires. It's easy to make a bead breaker, and working tire irons is just a matter of patience and strength. Just another way to know your bike I guess.

That sounds right. I do all my own - except for radials. We were charged 40 plus balancing plus shop supplies plus valve and so on at one local shop and never went back there.

I do all my own.
Static balance isn't a big deal, I check but rarely need any with 'good' tyres
Radials (actually anything over 3" wide rim) need dynamic balance, thats at least $15.00 everywhere (it's a $2,500~$5,000 machine that needs paying for)

Dont think he touched the spokes but I don't really know. Well, I even got pissed off trying to get the tube in there so no way in hell can I do it without pinching the tube, then I'd like to have it balanced regardless so I'm thinking I'll just pay up for the rear wheel as well.

I've changed my own tires and tubes all my life. I can't picture myself paying for something so simple. It was the first thing my Dad taught me when I started riding.

Think the price depends very much on whether you bought the tyre in the same shop or brought your own.

Best regards
Sven

You may get mount and balance rolled into price when you buy a tyre from shop, but, you won't get tyre very cheap.
About 20 yrs ago, (1991) M&P (South Wales) could retail tyres cheaper than we (as a shop) could buy them (for the exact same tyre)
The difference was, they had enough buying power to actually keep a tyre factory running for up to 3 months (that's a lot of tyres)

At present, It's costing around $25,000 to train as a motorcycle tech (Wyotech, MMI, etc)
Starting pay isn't particularly good ($10.50~$14.00 hr)
Shop has a lot of overheads, plus liability insurance to pay. $80.00 an hour isn't unreasonable, many places charge more ( $120.00 an hour or more, depending on manufacturer and location)

Anyone got labour rates for BMW or Ducati dealer in NYC?

Fitting tyres and tubes IS easy - WHEN YOU KNOW HOW.
'Pop' a couple of tubes at $12.00~$16.00 each and $35.00 starts to look real cheap (and definitely less frustrating)
I know money is tight everywhere but, it often works out cheaper in the long run to have it done right the first time, plus having a 'warranty' of sorts

I always bring just the wheel in to get the 10 dollar mount and balance. I dont make them pull the wheel off and put it back on. I've mounted a tire before and had them balance it for me and it still cost me 7 bucks so i figured hey whats another 3 bucks to know i'm not going to pop a tube.

local prices are about 50 to have 2 tires pulled and installed and balanced 75 if you want dyna beads... our shop charges 40 for 2, 55 if they want dyna beads... and we are sick cheap! i have buddys that have paid 80

ducati in NYC rates? I don't know... but I'll ask my cousin (monster owner, also owner of a NYC chopper's custom bike.... let me just say, I choose not to talk about bikes with him; more money then knowledge)
