How much is too much?

I'm broke too but have 2 ridable projects and 2 dirt bikes to fix. I fully intend to keep adding to that until I run out of space. I also intend to first build a shop space out back big enough to house the bikes and tools. My plan is to have as many bikes as I have moods, which is a shit load. Within $$ reason etc. I got my little cafe commuter, but I want a full blown race rep cafe, fast, good handling uncomfortable back roads blaster. I have my long distance 2-up bike, but I want an ADV style bike too, to many nice dirt back roads around here not too. I want a modern, reliable bike as well. Been lusting after the CBR250R thumper. I think that bike would be a great light touring bike 80 MPG and still fun. I don;t have desire for a crotch rocket, not because I don't like em, but because I know myself and it would be a bad mix with me. Although Squadra's race rep for the street has me thinking maybe I could and be good.....but likely I would loose my license or worse my life. I also want a nice chop/bob something to just ride when the mood strikes. + many more. Most of these bikes I want to build or make mine and also if they are projects, they can be done slower and with funds as they become available. I am blessed with 2 running bikes and would have to always have a rider, no matter how many projects I have, but I feel like I can spend the next 40 years collecting without a problem.....other than how to hide them from my wife ;D

Quote of the year right there! And good wisdom to live by!

In the interest of keeping the peace (with the wife)... one rider, one project.
I made a deal with her; when I turn 30 I can get something else, until then its a no go.
The little lady is my balance, keeps me from going off the deep end and buying more bikes than I can enjoy.

Fuck my old boots Slice ...you're a patient man.

I assume all the above relates to the bikes? NOT I assume when you reach 30 she's condoning another woman - I jest.

I had that with Wife #1, [ bear in mind I was not much more than a yoof of 21 ]. I had pretty much the same demands - 1 bike -1 Wife.

That lead very rapidly to Wife #2, who was completely on my wavelength - and all was peace and harmony. Until she fucked off with my best mate ....ah, well. Wife #3 has decided to be, just.......... tolerant.

That said, if you think that much of your Wife - she's obviously a keeper!!

Pity you have to wish your life away until that magic 30

Haha, yeah she isn't just tollerant... She actually enjoys that I enjoy working on bikes. I asked her about it recently and her word were "You talk to me like I know what you are talking about and that makes me feel good because I feel involved and it makes you happy". She sits there for hours with me and shoots the breeze over a drink as we talk about bikes. She doesnt really know anything about them other than they make me happy... I am a lucky man, thats for sure.

I already have two bikes; the 1966 honda 305 dream and a 1977 Honda cb550k... The exact details of the deal are as follows:

When I turn 30 years old (27 years old now) she will get me a new bike of my choice for my birthday - As for what that bike will be, there are no rules.

Mind you, this is all pending that I complete the renovations on the house before then! ;)

Anyways, I hear a bunch of guys refer to their garage/shed as the 'divorce maker' but its not for me... She is actually involved in what I do, maybe thats why she likes my hobby.

My Wife is fine with it as long as I clean up mess, which is good to keep clutter otu of the work area, and I don't spend money we don't have, which I don't. She knows bikes are therapy fro me, and I am usually in a better mood after a rdie or wrench session, she tolerates bike talk, and loves to ride with me whenever we can get a chance, so it's about balance. She actually hopes we can get a garage soon too. For her to park the car and for me to fix the bikes :)

Slice. if she's that into bikes. do what I did buy her own and fuck waiting till you're 30 for another.

Oh hell no Brad. Im all about it. I think the original, somewhat tongue in cheek point of this thread was lost in translation. I would bring home about 100 more bikes if I could afford them. Ill get a couple finished up this summer, I have just had 10,000,000 things taking me away from the garage lately, and with the wife being in grad school until last month, funds we're/are a bit low. As far as the garage full of junk comments, I dont see it that way at all. When I put bikes together, I rarely use 60% of the stock bits. That means I have lots of leftovers to feed the dogs. Haha. Ask any of the locals, or even a few guys from other areas and theyll tell ya. If just about ANYONE needs a part, and I have it, they can take it. Im like the worlds cheapest salvage yard/parts store. Hahaha. Thats the way I like it though. For some odd reason, the planets aligned and my phone/email nearly never stops blowing up with folks who have old bikes and want to practically give them away. And thats cool w me. :)

VonYinzer,

My ladys in grad school (PhD) as well in Boston... I know the feeling man, you aren't alone!

Whooooaaa back there Slice. You forgot to mention in your first post about her BUYING you a bike.

Definitely a keeper - and just think HOW MANY bikes you can buy from 30 years on!!
I'm 67 and in the past 3 weeks got rid of the culled bikes [ due to garage loss ] - but still managed to buy another THREE ...........

Mrs.B #3 just shakes her head and let's me get on with things these days. One important caveat - I take NOTHING from the household budget. Everything I spend on my bikes comes from funds generated from the sale of unwanted bits / bikes.

Von, please say you'll keep the name "HOT MESS" for that RD400 project. Slice, you and I have similar situations, but mine is more dependent on finances. Once I land the teaching job that I'm hunting, I'll have the opportunity to pursue my next project bike, plus a decent 2-up machine for the two of us. Right now we've agreed that we just have no money for it--budget locked down tighter than Fort Knox...except with no money inside, lol.

A situation with my dad leads to the second similarity between us. My mom bought my dad a new (used) motorcycle as a surprise for his birthday 4 or 5 years ago. It was a Dyna-series Harley, and it ran great. I should know--I am the one who rode it up to his house on his birthday revving it like a Hell's Angel. He didn't take very well to the un-baffled exhaust, but my mom told him that she had an agreement with the guys at the local dealership to fit whatever pipes he wanted on it. Well, guess what he did. He basically turned his nose up at it, and took it to the dealership and traded it in on a completely different bike.

Now, I love my dad, but that crap crushed my mom--she had tried pretty dang hard. Anyway, I had just sold my bike at the time to pay off some debt (deja vu all of a sudden), and my wife promised to buy me a bike someday, as long as I promise not to return it. Yes! Of course! Jeez, I don't care if she buys me a Hyosung, it will stay in the garage for a loooong time, because it'll be the bike that reminds me of how awesome my wife is. Not many guys get that lucky, so Slice, I hope you appreciate it.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I turn 30 in July, but you and I might get those bikes at the same time, haha.

Beachcomber - Yeah she is pretty wicked, i didnt see it coming, she told me to come outside and there is this dirtbag with a '66 dream in the back of his pick up, I look at her and she says well are going to going to get it off that flat bed or do I have to!? I lost my shit... It barely ran but that wasnt the point.

Platkeyboy - I will keep that bike forever, I play with the idea of selling it from time-to-time but it would crush her if I did, we talked so much about it and went for some nice rides on it! Thats so funny because I used to own a Hyosung GT650R... Here come the insults! I actually really enjoyed that bike, it was fun for a while... really reliable, but the hazing I took for it with the boys wasnt worth it after a while so I unloaded her, that and I really hated the colour (yellow).

LOL, well I figured someone would say that, but it's extra ironic that it was you. Well, at least it was a fun Hyosung. Yours had an engine that is basically from an SV650, which is not too shabby. If it helps, I was picturing something along THESE lines:

Hyosung-GV-650-Aquila-2005-01.jpg

Ahhhh hahahaha. Oh wait, don't tell me, someone owned one of these too... Oh well.

This is my first post in this forum, but it seems like I'm right at home.

In 1983 my wife bought me a new V45 Sabre for my birthday. It was the most awesome machine I've ridden and had a ton of technology - anti-rear wheel lock clutch, TRAC, BIG brakes, mono-shock with air and adjustable dampning.... but I digress.

I loved to go fast on that bike (it would do a ton and a half) and because my family became more important than my addiction (going really fast), I quit riding completly for 25 years. I stll have the same family and I suppose I still have the same addiction.

I'm just starting my comeback project - a '76 TS250 barn find with 1100 miles. With fresh fuel and oil, it started on the 4th kick! I plan to make a vintage Cafe Racer that smokes :)

Mike, you're a whore.
A dirty-dirty whore......

(I mean that in the best possible way!)

Tons of 'project bikes' means tons of saleable extras!

I dont suffer from this syndrome, not yet at least. A friend of mine seems to though. He has a '49 Norton Racebike, a '51 Manx Norton, an IDK what year Triton Project, a Rickman Frame with a Trident motor, a Honda Dream 50, an older (70's) Laverda, a 70's Ducati 900ss, a Mike Hailwood Edition Ducati...i might be missing a few.

Anyway, he was telling me the other day how if he ever needs some spare cash, he could just sell a bike. Then proceeded to name all the bikes he wouldnt get rid of, which is all of the bikes i mentioned above hahaha! He races his '49 Norton and Rickman Trident and Dream 50...occasionally. But says he has no interest in riding on the street. He's more interested in the rareness/mechanicalness of the bikes.

Ive cut down exponentially... Hahaha. Theres the 68 cl175 that will go full on road racer. Fairing, eventual engine work, barely road legal, and barely comfortable for anything more than 30-40min at a time. Then theres my RD200, which is going to stay minty fresh. It'll get a full resto (with some power hop-up of course) when one of the other projects are done. And then theres the Ironhead. Its literally a plie of parts, and some buckets full of pieces. But its a bike Ive wanted since I was a kid and its going to be radness. Think 70s cool, think silverleaf, think lound and fast, and think many shades of green paint. It will be called "the Groady Toad" and it will get your girlfriend pregnant. Haha... Thats it. And that will be it for awhile...
