How thick is your seat cushion and how comfortable is it ?

Hi guys :) I need to redo my seat cushion. It is way too hard and instead of absorbing the impact, it sends my ass right up into the air! I was wondering if you guys could list the material that you used, how thick it was, and how comfortable it is for you? Thanks guys.

Cut down the stock Suzuki seat foam (with stock seat base) on my GS550, to about 2 inches max thickness in the forward area. Rode over 17,000 km. in 3 months on it. Felt fine.
Using 1/2 inch closed cell racer seat foam on my V-twin cafe bike. Feels okay, wouldn't do coast to coast with it though. For some reason, I like it better than the 1 inch foam I had on the previous cafe seat.
All my dirttrack / streettracker seats used 2 inch foam of various densities, worked okay. I think foam density is at least as important as thickness. You might also consider buying a gel cell seat kit, but I haven't tried one...
Hope this helps.

On my last tracker I used 1/2" high density black foam that is used on all the racers...then I added the gell pad mentioned above. That was a really nice combo that could actually be ridden for miles on end. You'll want to put upholstery over the gell pad though...thay don't seem to hold up well to UV.

has anyone tried just halving their stock seat? id interested in how comfortable that is if someone has done it

I cut off about that much, maybe a tiny bit more. It still feels good, but because of the wire around the edges of the seat cover, it pinches my thigh when i have my legs down. The stock seat for my bike is very wide and has no curves in it. I am also pretty short and only weight about 150pounds. If you were to do it i would recommend shaving off a little bit at a time and testing it out. That way you don't end up cutting too much off. What bike do you have?

I have a 1981 KZ550, and i like the stock seat but im only 5'6" so i could use to lower the seat and bike a little

I was thinking if i did trim some foam off that i also might try to hammer the seat pan in a little to make just a tiny bit narrower, although its not to wide right now i dont really need knee dents to tuck in and be comfortable

i make seats pretty regularly. the best material i've used is neoprene from a life jacket. i can't remember what brand the life jacket is.. but the foam is a bit less than an inch thick. the foam is really dense, so it doesn't need to be too thick to be comfortable.

HEY! It's the 'Girl Named Go!'....how's tricks? Hope you're doing well these days.

Listen to this one when it comes to seats....she makes some really nice pieces.

Speaking of which Go, do you know of a good source for leopard print upholstery vinyl?
I'm working on a bike for my girl and she wants leopard print on the seat.....go figure!

hey there! i'm doing great, excited about getting the cb350 on the road.. ordering parts like crazy. new tires and shocks and gaskets, oh my!
thanks for the bump on the seats :)
leopard print vinyl.. i should be able to get a hold of some for you, i'll let you know!

go!,

do you use both the foam in the life jacket and the covering, or just the inner foam piece?
this seems like a great idea since that foam has to be waterproof.

i just use the inner foam piece. i adhere it to the seat and upholster it. it's really comfortable, durable, and waterproof. i buy an XL jacket to get the most foam

i believe the life jackets i use are by o'rageous, and about $35. i'm sure there are other brands that use neoprene too

I just "halved" my original 79 CB650 seat foam when I built my cafe seat....so far so good. My son had a suggestion today. We were cleaning out the garage, and had a few dense waterproof foam snow "boogie boards". They are about 1.5"+ thick, a closed cell foam, with a smooth bottom layer. They have a slight upward curve, but the center section has a nice piece you could use. I was going to toss them, but figured they could make a good base layer, to be covered with a nice neoprene. I remember I paid 6 bucks on sale for them at Wally World......

i hot rodder trick is to use real thick carpet padding its stiff enough that it doesnt have to be over an 1" or so in thickness but is still comfy

Ok so i just ended up cutting out an inch of the foam from the stock seat and that worked out the best. No sore ass after an hour of riding. I wish i would've done that a month ago :( It would have saved me a ton of money. Thanks for all the tips and replies guys ;D

I was surfin the ebay when I came across some closed cell foam, its the same crap they use in wet suits and I think its the same material as in the life jackets. I shot the seller a message asking if he had any other thickness's. His reply was.

Dear wicked fresh, <<<< not my ebay alias I changed it
