How to afford anything...

Did you read this?? The guy is a total Douche bag! seriously, read this again. you want to live like this and you will be living in your parents basement with and imaginary wife, just like this guy.

There are some valid points that I agree with and practice but some are just lame.

"If you save $5 a day by skipping a latte, you'll feel better, make more money, have more fun and save almost $2,000 every year. I don't know how much Starbucks actually charges for each dose, but give it up for a couple of years and you again just paid for a free new exotic camera."

Um....no thanks. Of course if you skip out on everything that makes life worth living (good food, dining out with pretty women, good coffee, good alcohol, fun motorcycles, vacations, etc. etc.) you can afford a camera in 3 years. You also live with your parents, take the bus to work, eat ramen noodles for lunch and the dollar menu from a shithole fast food restaraunt for dinner (with water of course), and maintain a diluted sense of how well your doing. I'd rather work my ass off and spend my money on anything I want then to do nothing and invest all my time in being cheap.

undoubtedly.

ken rockwell does have a bit of an attitude... but i kind of take his knowledge (on photography mostly) as pj's knowledge is on bikes.

sometimes it may come off stand-offish, and he may not always be totally correct as per textbook, but he knows a fuck-ton more then myself and has years of experience to back it up.

theres a fridge down their filled with beer and meat, all my tools, and my motorcycle... doesnt sound half bad...

Bing. Spot-friggin'-on, mate.

living with parents

I live with my mum. I'm 22. I'm going insane. I'm working the only job I could get in town and living at home so I can save to go around Australia. I didn't have a 'gap year' before uni and I studied my ass off so I could be one of the 7 out of 140 who graduated my hard-as-fuck degree.

After my trip around, I'm finding a job (using the degree) and getting my own damn place. If I don't, I'll either end up going insane, or killing my mother. Both are horrible options.

Save your money by working hard and not buying stupid crap.

Oh, and Rocan? There might be a fridge and a motorcycle, but there sure as hell isn't a meaningful relationship down there with a human female.

Cheers - boingk

And shit, heres another brainwave. It's basically how I can afford to do thing that I other wouldn't - owning a vintage car, and a few motorcycles for example, while pissing it up on the weekend with mates, drinking high class coffee and saving for a long travelling holiday.

If you can do something yourself to save a buck, do it.

This, for me, amounts to brewing my own beer, roasting my own coffee and maintaining and repairing my own vehicles. I also enjoy and take pride in doing these things. The fact that they save me a huge amount of money is beside the point - I actually like doing them - although it is a nice bonus.

Cheers - boingk

PS: If you want a basic summary, here goes:

Two dozen beers commercially: $40
Two dozen beers homemade: $8 - and usually of a higher standard

Valve check and oil change: $200
Valve check and oil change: $15 - and I know its been done right

Roasted coffee at the supermarket: $40/kilogram... and its friggin' average.
Roasted coffee from home: $12/kilogram... and its goddamn awesome.

As per above, its down to satisfaction in what I do and the need to save some cash. Might be able to guess I'm enjoying a few homebrews as well haha...

Rocan- Didn't mean to bust on you at all. he does make some points about frugality and I've read a lot of his blogs about photography, he knows his shit. There is also nothing inherently wrong with living at home with the rents. Of course you live at home, You're in High school that is where you should be. I was in and out of my parents house for one reason or another until I was 26. Its the reasons why you live at home that matters. This guy sounds like a sponge and the last person on earth I'd want to spend any time with or take lifestyle advice from. He should stick to Photo advice.

hahaha... hell, i dont care how much it costs me; no way ill stay living with my own rents when i get out of college.

as boingk puts... take it with a pinch of salt. there are some places in my life where i would like to save a dollar here and there, but simply cannot. example...

coffee every morning from deli next door = 1 dollar... 5 times a week, 5 dollars. 4 weeks a month, 20 dollars. im in school about 8-9 months a year, so thats about 160 dollars in coffee every year.

why dont i make it home, and have delicious coffee? simple. my rents are out of my house early in the morning and have long sinced stopped having their own cup of coffee, so it would suck to make even half a pot and have it go to waste. i mean, maybe if i start making it every day theyll start drinking it again... well see.

Pick and choose, pick and choose. Its good you are aware of these things at a young age though. It will help you as you go along. Try to get in to the habit of keeping track of everything you spend, keep a notebook or something. Really helps at the end of the month and the more aware you are of what you are spending the easier it is to keep control. Just my .02

been at it for a while. much easier with paypal as my primary expenses organizer, and with my debit card and online banking, very easy to see how much goes in, and how much goes out.

HAHA, best part is at the very end where he asks for donations.
sites a pricy to run, especially one with as many pics as his.

as he said "dont be embarassed to be frugal"

xD

i love when people see my old DSLR, and mention how old it is, but then comment my pictures online and ask why they cant get pictures as nice as my own with their super pricy camera. xD

Spot on with the SLR thing, Rocan. Rings true with bikes as well - I've carved up a few people when I've been on some unlikely bikes... XR600R, 1984 GSX-1100, CBR250RR... hahaha, good times...

At the moment its crunch time for me and I'm getting all the 'big ticket' stuff I need to go around Australia. Well, you might reckon I may not need the performance camshaft... but I reckon I do! Overtime through the holiday period is paying for that, that and having about 12 days off in a year.

That is so funny someone would post that on here, Ken Rockwell is something else, don't get me wrong, he is the go to guy when it comes to photography. Just yesterday I was watching a video regarding one of his prized photo, he is the most frugal person to the 10th power. In the interview he states that he took the award winning picture using a broken camera, I admire him for being honest, not that many people admit they are cheap, but I wouldn't invite this person to lunch, he would want a split check and and calculate his part of the tip. Just wondering, does anyone here on DTT go to that extreme to split the check to that degree? If I invite someone to lunch I always take care of the bill, and if someone invites me I always ask for the bill, and if I don't get to pay the bill, I always offer to leave a tip.

im usually the same if its reasonable. if its a lot of people splitting the bill is a matter of splitting the total, then everyone throws in whatever for the tip.

"Go Dutch This isn't the way to win favor among women, but it is a way to save money.
I've never paid for my girlfriends, but this was more out of bad upbringing than cheapness. I never knew better.
My wife has explained this to me today as something I'll need to know if she ever croaks, although of course we still both pay our own ways."

No thanks dude, I enjoy getting laid. :D
One thing for sure though.... from surfboards to bike stuff to the two leather jackets I've bought recently, to the electric carving knife I used to trim my seat foam, it's hard to beat craigslist if you know what you're looking for and you're willing to search (patiently if need be) for it....

i didnt spend a penny on the first three girls i screwed... the ones after that, i dont think i bought them much more then a drink or a slice of pizza.

Never into spending much on girls I'm not dating. If I am in a commited realtionship then yeah, sure, why not... but if its just a girl I meet at the bar then its only a drink (or maybe two) out of me. I mean, I don't know them from a bar of soap - why should I pay for their drinks?

And on notebooks, big fan of them myself. I keep track of the cost of all my build in notebooks so when it comes to the crunch I know what I've spent and on what items. Also comes in handy come selling time so you know if you're going out backwards. So far I've made a profit or broke even on all but my RS125 - and that was out of rego and needed work when I sold it for $500 less than I had in it. I figure it was a good sell.
